For most college students, there’s no time as stressful as the final stretch between Thanksgiving and winter breaks. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the barrage of midterms, final projects and essays as the semester draws to a close. But Duke is full of opportunities to decompress. The Mary Lou Williams Center was a place that exuded safety and warmth, sophomore Tiana Clemons said, sitting on a bright blue bench on Abele Quad. She described a typical weekday. A gentle light would stream in through the windows. Some students studied diligently; others filled the space with laughter, absorbed in lively conversation. Familiar BET shows and music played in the background. It was a place, Clemons said, that felt like home.

It’s a sleepy morning at the Duke Puppy Kindergarten in early October. Inside a cozy room within the Duke Canine Cognition Center, Congo and Nancy are perfectly content. The two dogs — an adult and a puppy Labrador-golden mix — sniff, cuddle and pad around the space without a care in the world.

On April 28, registered voters in North Carolina will be able to cast the first in-person ballots in the 2022 statewide primary elections. The voting period, which lasts until Election Day on Tuesday, May 17, follows a two-month delay issued by the North Carolina Supreme Court last December.
