Yesterday, the Blue Devils travelled to Charlottesville, Va. in anticipation of the outdoor ACC championship meet. Today, after weeks of preparation and successful performances, Blue Devil throwers, distance runners and multi-event athletes will step up in hopes of starting the meet on a high note for Duke.

For most track and field athletes, setting a new personal record simply means outperforming their own previous time or distance. For a few of the top performers such a feat might also mean setting a new school record. For Duke junior Curtis Beach, a new personal best in the 1000-meter portion of the heptathlon also meant a new world record, and he shattered his own world record in the event en route to a national title.

The Blue Devils made program history at the ACC Indoor Championships last weekend in Boston, taking home four individual golds in addition to setting several personal and school records.

Six Blue Devil men headed to New York Saturday to compete in the most renowned meet of their season, the Millrose Games. Since 1908, top competitors from all over the world have gathered at the meet for the chance to face off against each other. This past weekend, some of Duke’s best athletes got the chance to go head-to-head with some of the toughest competition in the world, and several found success.

For a team that had lost some of its most outstanding athletes to graduation, Duke started off the 2011 season with remarkably high goals. Among other things, head coach Norm Ogilvie and his runners looked forward to building on the momentum created by the 2010 team’s success and trying to earn a top-15 finish at the NCAA championship.

Just before the season’s start in early September, the Blue Devils were excited about the opportunities that lay before them, voicing their commitment to taking the season ‘one day at a time.’ Although their optimism was cautious and both head coach Kevin Jermyn and his runners refrained from setting specific goals, they did admit to a desire to improve upon the previous year’s results. After the end of a difficult season, however, Duke will have to walk away knowing that it was unable to accomplish its goal.

Junior Madeline Morgan, the only Duke runner at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., crossed the finish line Monday in 89th place to put Duke’s name on the results sheet for the last time this year.

Junior Madeline Morgan has been excelling in her sport since she was in the seventh grade. The next year, her success translated into a spot on her high school varsity team. Now, it means getting the chance to run at the NCAA championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

Despite their high hopes, neither the Blue Devil men nor the women were able to secure a team bid to the NCAA championship meet as they finished in sixth and fifth, respectively, at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Louisville, Ky. But for one Duke runner, the results were different.
