Well, here we are. In one of the more forgettable Duke seasons in recent memory, it is time to take on the rivals from down the road, North Carolina. Finding wins has been tough in the ACC this year, but for both UNC and Duke, the importance of this game goes way beyond bragging rights. Both teams need this win to keep tournament hopes alive. Let’s take a closer look at who could be the difference makers for each side:

X-Factor: Duke men's basketball will need Mark Williams to own the paint against Illinois

In their second top-10 matchup of the season, the Blue Devils will be taking on No. 5 Illinois, who has come out to a hot start this season. Duke, on the other hand, showed some glaring weaknesses against Michigan State. After a few lineup changes and some better shooting, the Blue Devils looked much improved against Bellarmine. One of the biggest changes could prove to be a big factor in this upcoming ranked matchup.

It’s time for the 2020 edition of the Tobacco Road football showdown. Duke and North Carolina face off coming in with very different mindsets. Duke had a commanding win over Charlotte last week, while the Tar Heels were upset by Virginia and have slowed down after their flaming hot start. The game could be greatly impacted by these players:



Breakout player: Jarett Garner has exceeded expectations all season

Who is this newfound star that’s been impressing Blue Devil fanatics week after week? Where did he come from? Breakout wide receiver Jarett Garner is a redshirt sophomore originally from Harrisburg, N.C., just two hours outside of Durham. Coming out of high school, Garner was a three-star recruit who had an incredible senior year. He was able to haul in 43 receptions for 846 yards and 10 touchdowns, confirming the hype around his ability was very real.


Duke in the NBA: Season wrap up

After roughly three months in the Orlando bubble, the NBA has begun the offseason process. This means preparing for the draft, free agency and of course, figuring out how next season is going to be played amid the COVID-19 pandemic. More importantly, it means we can talk about what the future looks like for former Blue Devils who have taken their talents to the sport’s next level.



Third and goal: Duke football's defensive line will be pivotal against N.C. State

Last week Duke saw a Syracuse team that was unable to capitalize on its turnovers like teams in previous weeks have. As a result of that, the Blue Devils picked up their first win of the season in what seemed to be an all-around dominant game from the team, apart from the turnovers. This week, they are coming up against a much more formidable team in N.C. State. They will need last week’s strong performance to carry over in order to maintain that level of success.

For the first time this season, the world gets to see the Virginia football team in action. After numerous scheduling conflicts, the Cavaliers’ first game of the season will be against the Duke Blue Devils, who find themselves looking to bounce back from their 0-2 start. Let’s take a look at one player from each side that could swing the game in their team’s favor.  


Duke in the NFL: Opening week

The long-awaited opening weekend of the NFL season has come and gone, as the first week came to a close Monday night. Due to the pandemic, the NFL opted not to have preseason games this year. For many teams, this weekend was the first time they were able to see their players on the field, and many fans expected the play to be a bit sloppier than it typically is. For former Duke players, the first week of the season had its ups and downs. 


Take of the week: Quarterback Chase Brice is the key to an upset against Notre Dame

Earlier this week, Duke announced its starting quarterback after a competitive preseason. Clemson transfer Chase Brice fought with redshirt junior Chris Katrenick and redshirt sophomore Gunnar Holmberg for the starting position and ultimately earned the role by “[making] plays at the highest rate,” as head coach David Cutcliffe said when the decision was made.
