Lemur star of Zoboomafoo remembered as playful and caring

For the Duke Lemur Center, the death of Jovian—a Coquerel’s sifaka who called the center home for 20 years—meant the loss of a lemur praised for his kindness and spirit. But for teenagers and twentysomethings across the country, it meant the loss of a childhood icon—Zoboomafoo, the titular role Jovian played on the popular kids TV show.


LGBTQ-inclusive question well-received by peer institutions

Senior Daniel Kort, president of Blue Devils United, headed to Dartmouth this weekend to attend IvyQ—a conference where Ivy League LGBTQ and Ally students discussed building diverse, aware communities. Kort presented to conference members Duke's new LGBTQ-inclusive question, which made the University one of the first to explicitly mention sexual orientation and gender identity on its application. The Chronicle's Rachel Chason sat down with Kort to discuss his time at the conference, where he was one of several students from non-Ivy institutions of the 300 total attendees.








Duke Support fosters safe space for sexual assault survivors

With a national spotlight focused on addressing sexual assault on college campus, senior Ashley Pollard is helping introduce a support group for survivors to Duke's campus this Fall. Pollard is one of four co-leaders of Duke Support, a group for survivors of sexual assault that began meeting in September. Pollard emphasized that all students are welcome at meetings—whether or not they choose to speak. She explained that students can sign up for their listserv anonymously on the group's website. The Chronicle's Rachel Chason sat down with Pollard to discuss why this organization is crucial to campus culture.



New ethics fellow to research transparency in health care

Launched this Fall, the George C. Lamb Jr. Regulatory Fellows will connect students and faculty studying how to solve issues related to business, ethics and regulation. Duke's Kenan Institute for Ethics, Fuqua School of Business and Trinity College of Arts and Sciences will be collaborating to host the visiting fellows. Jennifer Miller, the founding director of Bioethics International and a lab fellow in the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University, is the program's first fellow. The Chronicle's Rachel Chason spoke with Miller to discuss her goals for the first year of work.
