After three consecutive narrow loses to top-flight ACC competition, the football team entered Saturday's contest against Maryland hoping to finally come through and earn its first conference victory in three seasons. From the opening snap, their hopes never materialized.

Opening up The Chronicle each morning rarely surprises me anymore. After all, as a writer and editor for the paper, I usually read much of tomorrow's news the night before.

Fourteen seconds, one timeout left, ten yards. Having just miraculously recovered an onside kick at the N.C. State 49-yard line--an attempt made possible by an equally improbable 40-yard touchdown pass from Adam Smith to Khary Sharpe just seconds earlier--Duke needed just 10 yards, maybe only six, to give kicker Brent Garber a realistic try at a game-winning kick.

After losing two closely fought contests the past two weekends against conference foes Virginia and Wake Forest the football team looks to rebound this Saturday against North Carolina State. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils (2-5, 0-3 in the ACC), the 10th-ranked Wolfpack enter the contest as the ACC's hottest team, boasting a perfect 7-0 record.

It was an odd setting for a euphoric moment, but under a cold, driving rain and in front of a sparse crowd shivering under their umbrellas, the women's soccer team ended a five-game winless skid with a convincing 3-0 victory over N.C. State.

Before Saturday's loss to Virginia, Alex Wade ranked second in the ACC in rushing. He stood tied for first in the nation for most 100-yard games. Even after giving way to Chris Douglas Saturday and finishing with just 53 yards of his own, Wade's star still burns brightly, as he has burst on the collegiate football scene like no other Duke running back in the last 10 years.

Two and a half weeks ago things looked very good for the women's soccer team. With a record of 5-2 and fresh off an upset of the then No. 15 Florida Gators, the Blue Devils appeared to be poised for a breakout season.

CHAPEL HILL -- Despite struggling Sunday with a final round score of 300, Duke held off Oklahoma State for a one-stroke victory at the three-day Tar Heel Invitational. Liz Janangelo posted the team's lowest individual score, as her six-under-par total earned the freshman her first collegiate title.

As the Duke coaching staff will be the first to tell you, all of this season's five freshmen were recruited because each would bring something unique to the 2002-2003 squad, whether it be ball handling, post-play or sharp shooting.

CHAPEL HILL -- The women's soccer team suffered its second consecutive overtime defeat Friday night, as the No. 17 Blue Devils, despite jumping to an early 2-0 advantage, fell 4-3 to the 11th-ranked Washington Huskies. A clearly fatigued Blue Devil team then rebounded Sunday with a 2-0 win over Wofford, outshooting the Terriers (0-2-1) 26-2.

The goal for Robbie Church and the women's soccer team was to get faster and more aggressive. Defensively stout, particularly with All-ACC goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir in net, Church needed his team to become an attacking force, one that could dictate play against the nation's top teams, rather than rely on counterattacking.

The women's soccer team travels to prestigious Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill tonight, where the No.17 Blue Devils (1-1) will take on 11th-ranked Washington (2-0) in the opening round of the Carolina Nike Classic. Duke will conclude the two-game weekend Sunday against Wofford.

Following last spring's intrasquad scrimmage, it appeared as if the Duke football team's most secure and dependable position would be at quarterback. Senior D. Bryant was preparing for his third year as the Blue Devils' starting playcaller, and should Bryant miss time with injury, Duke's stable of young talent looked quite able to fill in for a few games until Bryant could return.

Duke basketball currently rests in a state of flux: the balance of power between the men's and women's basketball programs has temporarily shifted. While the men must reload, the women reign supreme. And although both teams insist there is no competition between them, if men's coach Mike Krzyzewski is not careful, Gail Goestenkors, his female counterpart, might begin to match some of his accomplishments.
