Duke track and field looking to build off recent success at ACC Indoor Championships

For Duke track and field, the end of February is always a crucial point in the indoor season, with this year being no different. The ACC Indoor Championships get started Thursday in Clemson, SC., and the Blue Devils are looking to take a step forward from last February’s fifth and ninth-place finishes for the women and men, respectively.

There’s a lot for the Duke women’s golf team to be concerned about. While the Blue Devils technically enter this season as reigning national champions, much of their title-winning squad from 2019 is gone. Duke did not play at all during the fall due to COVID-19 concerns. The team’s lone senior, Jaravee Boonchant, stayed in her native Thailand during the entire fall semester.

On Monday night, Jalen Johnson opted out of the remainder of the 2020-21 season, ending a tumultuous campaign for the freshman forward. The five-star recruit started the season with a bang, putting up 19 points and 19 rebounds in the Blue Devils’ season opener, but quickly ran into some issues with replicating that high-level performance. The Milwaukee native missed three games due to a foot injury between December and January and even after returning has seen his playing time decrease in recent contests, including playing just eight minutes Saturday against N.C. State.

Coming off two straight ACC wins, the Blue Devils entered Monday in as good of a rhythm as they’ve been in all season. Despite all that, Miami proved to be no pushover in the initial 20 minutes of action, as the shorthanded Hurricanes played some inspired basketball to make it a game. Duke pulled ahead late, however, and leads 35-33 entering the break. Here are five observations from the first half:
