Life at Duke during COVID-19 from a food lover's perspective

(03/28/21 4:08pm)

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind. Ironically, my personal chaos coincided with a physical whirlwind as Durham was nearly struck by a tornado. If this doesn’t sum up the past few weeks of the second semester of my freshman year at Duke, I don’t know what could. Through all this discombobulation and stress, I felt as though the one thing I could rely on was the delicious food I could eat during meal times with friends. However, social dining ceased on March 13 when the Duke administration called for us to go into lockdown due to the extreme rise of COVID-19 cases. It was the same date a year ago that my high school announced that in-person classes would cease.

How to enjoy food after losing taste: Student foodie Alanna Peykar tells all

(02/15/21 8:31pm)

In a world where our lives can so easily be corrupted by negativity and stress, it is the little deliciously salty, sweet and savory treats that brighten our day. As an individual who proudly calls herself a foodie, I center my schedule around my meals. Every morning I look forward to waking up and eating a s’mores flavored Quest Bar as it takes me from the walls of Duke campus to my childhood summers roasting marshmallows by the campfire. As someone who lives to eat, one of my greatest fears is losing the ability to taste all the wonderful flavors found in each morsel. This fear is no longer something so far removed from reality, as the COVID-19 pandemic touches more people in our society than one could have ever imagined.

Picture the music video for Katy Perry’s 2010 summer hit “California Girls:” screaming neon colors, swirling rainbow lollipops, giant ice cream dripping with strawberry syrup and pink cotton candy clouds. Turns out, Durham-based cotton candy shop Wonderpuff has made this sugar-filled fantasy come to life. Wonderpuff is an all-organic, vegan cotton candy shop based in Durham. Crafted by delicate threads of organic flavored sugar, each ingredient coalesces into a beautifully swirled cotton candy.

Behind the scenes of The Lodge with TikTok food vlogger and Duke RA Ben Wallace

(09/16/20 5:56pm)

We have all heard the myths passed down by whispers about life inside the gray walls and glass windows of The Lodge, located at Duke Medical Center, now home to the Dukies identified through contact tracing. Although some may focus on the rooming amenities of The Lodge, I wondered, on a scale of Marketplace to West Union, how appetizing is the food at The Lodge? I decided, precautions in mind, to speak on Zoom to an actual student in the trenches.
