KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- With 1:41 remaining and Duke and Tennessee knotted at 53, Monique Currie took over the game. Currie, who had played subpar to that point, scored the Blue Devils' final six points in a 59-57 upset victory.

The Blue Devils' 81-74 victory over Michigan State perfectly depicted the cast of characters on the Duke squad. Specifically, the role each upperclassman performed in this early-season test should indicate the role he will take on as the season progresses and the games get tougher.

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lost at North Carolina Tuesday, 213-84 and 199-94, respectively. The Blue Devils still came away from Koury Natatorium with a moral victory by winning several events against the perennially contending Tar Heels.

Junior Shelden Williams, the Blue Devils’ 6-foot-9, 250-pound center is arguably the most unmistakable basketball player at Duke. Despite their familiarity with his appearance, however, few fans know that Williams was first a baseball, football and soccer player before falling in love with basketball, that he is an especially reserved person and that every summer he used to fish with his father Bob and brother Quincy.

After a number of missed opportunities, Duke and N.C. State were tied 0-0 Sunday in Raleigh. Then, with less than two minutes remaining, the Wolfpack's Aaron King snuck a low shot past Duke goalie to give N.C. State its first ACC victory and all but end the Blue Devils' hope for an ACC title.

The 28th-ranked men’s golf team looks to put a solid stamp on its fall season when it hosts the 2004 Duke Golf Classic Sunday and Monday at the Duke Golf Club. Coming off of a second-place finish two weeks ago in Chicago, Duke is confident given its familiarity with the course.

Many people consider Duke’s 28-10 victory over The Citadel (0-3) Saturday to be unimportant. The Bulldogs are in Division I-AA, so who cares that the Blue Devils (1-4) beat them? Heck, it appeared that less than 1,000 students showed up for the football game.

The Blue Devils hope to get their first win of the season Saturday against The Citadel. Duke's offense has struggled in its first four games but looks to gain momentum against the Division I-AA opponent.

So Grove, Tril and I were watching SportsCenter for the third time one night last week—I mean it’s not like we had work to do or anything—and when I saw that Stuart Scott was hosting, I got nervous and placed a brown bag beside me, just in case. During the very first highlight, Barry Bonds hit his 701st home run and prompted Scott to yell, “Holla at a playa when you see him in the street!” This prompted me to grab for the brown bag, Grove to throw his hat at the television and Tril to ask the question, “So what is his deal, man?”

With a group of unproven but talented freshmen, the expectations on Duke this season were minimal. Coming off several sub-par seasons, the Blue Devils seem to have reemerged on a national stage with a 2-1 victory over top-ranked Maryland Saturday, the team's second ACC win of the year.

Duke continued its undefeated season Wednesday night by topping the Campbell Camels 3-0 in a game that was closer than the score indicated. The Blue Devils have now scored 24 goals and allowed zero in six games, but Clemson will pose new challenges this weekends.

Okay, so before I say what I’m about to say, I will remind everyone that I have not gone off the deep end, I have not been paid to write this and I have not been experimenting with PCP. Oh yeah, and I am not a fan of the Boston Red Sox.

The men’s soccer team won two games this weekend in the 2004 Duke/adidas Soccer Classic, defeating the Columbia Lions 1-0 on Friday night and the Farleigh Dickinson (N.J.) Knights 2-0 Saturday. Head coach John Rennie picked up his 400th career victory against FDU and junior Blake Camp raked in MVP honors for the tournament. The team improved to 5-0 on the season, and goalkeeper Justin Trowbridge, a senior co-captain, has yet to surrender a goal this year.

Senior co-captain Phillip Alexander knows that Duke’s defense has lost a chunk of its heart and soul. Graduated linebackers Ryan Fowler and Matt Zielinski will no longer be positioned behind him, and Alexander’s good friend, the late Micah Harris, will not be in a three-point stance on the opposite end of the line.

Most teams that plan to use freshmen to fill in several vacancies in the starting lineup do not have a bright outlook. But that is certainly not the case for the men’s soccer team.
