british sea power

(02/21/08 5:00am)

Naming an album Do You Like Rock Music? is risky business, simply because it prompts condescending critics like myself to write the shortest review possible: "Yes, so don't buy this record." And don't get me wrong; I really want that to be the entire discussion on British Sea Power's third and most anticipated album.

Drive-by Truckers

(02/07/08 5:00am)

In my book, to be a good Southern rock band requires that you sing primarily about three topics: women, binge drinking and a kind of stoic, reserved loneliness. Based on these criteria, the Drive-By Truckers are a great Southern rock band. Their eclectic sound, which is a mix of blues, rock and some genre I've never even heard of called "cowpunk," is on full display in their eighth record, Brighter Than Creation's Dark. The album marks the recording debut of a new member, guitarist John Neff, who fills the void left by now-solo Trucker Jason Isbell.

Smooch shifts between styles, names

(02/07/08 5:00am)

Smooch is a hard band to label. Literally. They only use the Smooch moniker for their cover music. The name they like to use for their original material? Well, that's yet to be decided. Smooch (or whatever the band goes by) is made up of four seniors-guitarist Will Arnold, singer and guitarist Peter More, drummer Edward Wardle, vocalist Eric Griffin-and one Duke grad, bassist Julian Dawes, Trinity '07.

cat power

My grandfather always used to tell me, "For an artist to make a cover album, it takes determination and a sense of history. To make two cover albums, it takes passion and perhaps a lack of ingenuity." Okay, so maybe he never told me that. But I still think these words apply to Jukebox, the eighth album-and second cover album-by Cat Power (Charlyn "Chan" Marshall).

Writing our wrongs

(10/12/07 4:00am)

Julie and Mark are sister and brother. They are traveling together in France on summer vacation from college. One night they are staying alone in a cabin near the beach. They decide that it would be interesting and fun if they tried making love. At the very least, it would be a new experience for each of them. Julie is already taking birth control pills, but Mark uses a condom too, just to be safe. They both enjoy making love, but decide not to do it again. They keep that night as a special secret, which makes them feel even closer to each other.

Tears for Fears

(04/20/07 4:00am)

It is right about now that high school seniors across America are finally deciding where to go to college. They are done with applications, asking for recommendations, and waiting to hear back from schools. Regardless of where they got in, thousands of college-bound students have just completed one of the most rigorous and ruthless rites of passage we know of. Naturally, this is still a highly stressful time.

Hidden gems

(04/06/07 4:00am)

Not that I need to remind you, but Duke is an innovative and progressive place. Our academics here are not only world-class but incredibly inventive as well. A variety of disciplines are constantly joining forces to tackle relevant and intriguing problems. Since I just registered for classes this morning, I decided to highlight some of the more captivating courses I have taken so far here at Duke. I hope that this list will help as you frantically search for what to take when all of your preferred courses undoubtedly fill up.

So happy it's sad

(03/23/07 4:00am)

Most of you probably consider yourselves to be normal, happy people. You think that those doing better than you in life are also happier, and the people doing worse than you are most likely less happy. The guy you see at the bar with all of the friends and money and job security must enjoy life a lot more than you do.

My Oedipus Mess

(03/09/07 5:00am)

Guys, listen up. I think I have some bad news. I recently read something that shook me to my very core. In studies on sexual selection in various species of birds, researchers have found that "if the mother is not present when the young are seeking mates. the bird may simply choose the closest match [to the mother] it can find."

Outbreak

(02/23/07 5:00am)

Recently, a new disease has emerged across the country, ruining countless Friday nights and leaving thousands of men confused and dejected. The disorder only seems to be spreading, causing many people to fear that the worst is still to come. This terrible affliction is most commonly known as Prince Charming Syndrome, or PCS for short.

A modest proposal

(02/09/07 5:00am)

As you may have already suspected, the authorities here at Duke do not really want you to have a lot of fun. Recently, students have witnessed a massive effort by the administration to cut down on any enjoyable activity. They have increased the number of 8:30 a.m. classes, ended kegs on the quad and neutered tailgate. The reasoning behind all of this, I suppose, would be that the less time we spend killing our livers, the more time we will spend in the library unlocking the mysteries of the universe.
