New VP for OIE wants the Duke community to know more about the office

Kimberly Hewitt, former vice provost for institutional equity at Johns Hopkins University,  assumed the role of vice president for institutional equity at Duke Aug. 5. As the leader of the Office for Institutional Equity (OIE), Hewitt directs the handling of harassment and discrimination complaints and promotes Duke’s diversity and inclusion efforts. She talked to The Chronicle about her transition to Duke and future plans for the OIE. This interview was edited for length and clarity.








Confession: I'm addicted to productivity

It was 4:14 a.m. on a Friday night—or Saturday morning—and I was up the wall with frustration. My insomnia and sensitivity to caffeine had gotten the best of me and for two hours, and I’d been summoning sleep with no success. There was nothing productive I could be doing. But still, this idle time haunted me—it was cutting into the time and energy I had carefully allotted to my productive Saturday schedule. And then I confronted a question my boyfriend asked me a few weeks earlier.
