Just two weeks ago, it seemed like Duke men’s basketball’s season may be defined by intense underperformance — a-la 2022-23 North Carolina, who similarly began highly ranked before enduring an early slide. With star sophomore point guard Tyrese Proctor suffering an ankle injury and the Blue Devils sitting at 5-3, the outlook was bleak. Fast forward to the week of Christmas, where Duke knocked off then-No. 10 Baylor at Madison Square Garden to improve to 8-3, and it seems like Duke has regained the form needed to win the ACC.

Most Duke Kunshan University students from the Class of 2024 and 2025 began their college experience in Durham, when the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic made travel to China impossible. In the following years, several DKU students have applied to transfer to Duke, citing pandemic disruptions and academic differences as some of their reasons to return to Durham.

As most students rushed home for the holidays, hoping to enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation, Duke traveled to Charlotte Tuesday for a big doubleheader against The Citadel and Queens. The matchup yielded mixed results for the Blue Devils. On the one hand, the team scored only three individual victories against the Bulldogs, falling in the opening encounter by a score of 23-9. However, in the afternoon, Duke bounced back emphatically, trouncing the Royals in a dominant 47-0 victory.

It has been nearly a month since the last time the Blue Devils took the field — an impressive 30-19 win against Pitt on senior day — and it is safe to say that a lot has changed since then. Former head coach Mike Elko left for Texas A&M, key players on both sides of the ball entered the transfer portal and Duke hired a new head coach in Manny Diaz. The 2023 season, with all of its ups and downs, will finally come to an end Saturday in the Birmingham Bowl, where Duke will face Troy.

Coming off a 10-day break, the Blue Devils walked into Cameron Indoor Stadium for their Wednesday night matchup against Toledo well-rested and ready to play. The Rockets also came into the game on a hot streak, having not lost a game since the third week of November. As the clash of two red-hot teams began, it became increasingly clear that when everything goes right for the Blue Devils, they are a force to be reckoned with.
