A love letter to our cool, queer universe

(03/07/24 5:00am)

When you learned physics in high school, you probably learned classical physics — a system of calculus-based relations and rules that are used to model several real-world situations, such as collisions, friction, circuits and the dreaded block on an inclined plane. Perhaps you fell in love with the subject for its ability to deeply and elegantly explain the natural world and chose to continue studying the field — be it academically or on your own time.

The 2024 Oscars: Who is going to win v. Who should win

(03/05/24 7:38pm)

The Academy has faced an uphill battle this century: consistently plummeting Oscars TV ratings, box office stagnation, besides the MCU (and even that has slowed), and the challenge of incorporating streaming giants, such as Netflix, as legitimate studios. Since “The Slap,” however, ratings have been on the rise. Is this tabloid-y interest, or is film again becoming the cornerstone of American culture? What do this year’s major award nominees tell us about the future of film and the Academy?

HEEL KICKED: Duke women’s basketball falls just short in comeback bid, drops finale at North Carolina

(03/03/24 10:58pm)

CHAPEL HILL— Senior Day is supposed to be a time for celebration, honoring the legacy of players who have been cornerstones of a program for the past four or more years. For stars Deja Kelly and Alyssa Ustby and the remainder of the North Carolina senior class, their last memory at home will be beating their rival.

The curriculum isn't the problem

(03/04/24 5:00am)

You can’t force students to be intellectually curious. Regardless of Trinity's requirements, Duke students will — if they so desire — find ways of gamifying, bending the rules and cheapening the intentions set out by the administration. To address this, we must recognize that all students exist on a spectrum from only wanting a degree to learning for the sake of it and that most of us land somewhere in between.
