CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- After battling through a highly contested first half, senior Vicki Krapohl came out of the locker room and made the statement that she did not want to lose to arch-rival North Carolina in the teams' final regular season meeting. The senior, who lost her starting job to sophomore Lindsey Harding at the beginning of the season, came out and sunk back-to-back three-pointers just minutes into the second half to give the Blue Devils a 14-point lead that would be tested but not relinquished.







Beard injury, raucous crowd add to storyline for No. 2 Tennessee

Just 24 hours before No. 1 Duke (15-1) and No. 2 Tennessee (15-1) tip off in a battle of the nation's top-ranked teams, the seats and bleachers of Cameron Indoor Stadium were empty. The Lady Volunteers' head coach Pat Summitt circled the court as her players wrapped up their final practice in before tomorrow's game.

The Breslin Center is supposed to be one of the toughest places in the country to play, but Wednesday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge the Blue Devils silenced the crowd. Led by Shelden Williams' dominating seven-of-eight shooting performance in the post and point guard Chris Duhon's floor leadership, sixth-ranked Duke (4-1) cruised over No. 5 Michigan State (3-2) 72-50 in front of almost 15,000 stunned fans.

Duke has a number of tremendous women's sports programs, but until this year, field hockey was not among them. The Blue Devils, who face Maryland in the national semifinals tomorrow, have never been playing this late into November. After finishing 14-9 last year, the Blue Devils have had far and away their best season in school history, as they enter tomorrow's game at 19-3 having broken a litany of records along the way.
