MLK sit-in soundoff

(01/17/12 11:00am)

In a commemoration of the students who supported Martin Luther King’s cause in the wake of his death in 1968, members of the Duke community reenacted a collaborative sit-in on Chapel Quadrangle Monday. The sit-in honored King and the more than 1000 students who demonstrated their support of racial and labor equality about 43 years ago. The sit-in was sponsored by the Duke Partnership for Service, Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, Circle K, the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Life and the Center for Civic Engagement. The Chronicle’s Jack Mercola spoke with sit-in attendees to capture the motivations behind the demonstration.
