Extra Point: Duke football vs. Virginia

Virginia held off a valiant comeback attempt led by Duke backup quarterback Parker Boehme and sent the Blue Devils to their fourth straight loss by a score of 42-34 Saturday at Scott Stadium. The Cavaliers scored the first 21 points of the game and still led 42-20 when Duke coach David Cutcliffe replaced Thomas Sirk with Boehme. The redshirt sophomore promptly led two touchdown drives, but could not orchestrate a game-tying drive on two chances in the closing minutes.


Beyond the Arc: Duke men's basketball vs. Virginia Commonwealth

Duke rebounded from its first loss of the season with a gritty performance against Virginia Commonwealth to win 79-71 in the semifinals of the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden. The Blue Devils trailed for much of the contest, but came back from a six-point deficit in the second half with a 24-6 run. Sophomore Grayson Allen came off the bench for the first time this season and posted a career-high 30 points after a forgettable performance Tuesday against Kentucky. Freshman point guard Derryck Thornton started in his place and had 19 points in the best game of his young career.







Beyond the Arc: Duke basketball vs. Bryant

Duke’s offense came out firing on all cylinders and never took its foot off the gas in a 113-75 rout Saturday against Bryant. Grayson Allen and Matt Jones both surpassed their career highs in scoring with an impressive display of outside shooting, and Amile Jefferson finished with his second straight double-double to start the season. The contest was part of the 2K Classic—benefiting Wounded Warrior Project—which Duke will attempt to win next weekend in New York.

Coming off a 92-74 season-opening win against Siena, Duke takes the floor for the second straight night Saturday against Bryant. The inexperienced Blue Devils will look to continue to improving as a group and become more cohesive against the Bulldogs as they prepare for a major test Tuesday against Kentucky. After being blown out by North Carolina 66-31 last week, the Blue Devils prepare for their home finale against a Pittsburgh team that is at a similar crossroads in its season. Duke and the Panthers each started the season 6-1, but each has lost two straight games. With both teams simply looking to get their seasons back on track, Saturday's game holds major value even though it may not affect the ACC Coastal division race as anticipated. Every week throughout the football season, the Blue Zone will break down a player on each team who could be the difference-maker in the upcoming contest:




Extra Point: Duke football vs. North Carolina

North Carolina dismantled the Blue Devils from beginning to end Saturday afternoon at Kenan Memorial Stadium, running away with a 66-31 victory to keep the Victory Bell in Chapel Hill. The game was already decided by halftime as quarterback Marquise Williams’ record-breaking performance led the Tar Heels to a 38-10 lead heading into the locker room. With the win, North Carolina took full control of the Coastal division and virtually knocked the Blue Devils out of contention for a berth in the ACC championship.
