Music Review: Recycled Youth (Volume One)

(03/05/15 9:55am)

I once asked an honest, musically aware friend if it would ever be respectable to like Never Shout Never. His immediate text response: “No.” This didn't stop me from listening to their deep-feels-turned-to-rhythm tracks on runs or while composing dry academic papers, but was enough to prevent me from bringing the topic up with anyone again, friend or otherwise. Whereas other alternative rock bands like Panic! at the Disco or even Fall Out Boy can claim some more musical legitimacy in their songwriting and varied fan base, Never Shout Never has remained stuck in its rep as an angsty, but cute, teendom favorite.

Duke student selected as finalist for Mars expedition

(02/19/15 2:04pm)

Mars One—a nonprofit group that is working to send humans on a one-way trip to Mars—recently announced its 100 finalists out of 200,000 original applicants. One of them is senior Laurel Kaye, a physics major from Long Island, N.Y. Kaye will go through the final round of the application this year to see if she will be one of 24 people chosen to be the first to colonize the Red Planet, in teams of four at a time starting in 2024. The Chronicle’s Georgia Parke sat down with Kaye to talk about her dream of going into space and the path that remains to get there.

Music Review: Girls in Peacetime Just Want to Dance

(01/22/15 10:51am)

For a band whose cultured and crafted songwriting has been traditionally embracing of nostalgia, Belle and Sebastian has taken a surprising but successful step out of their own habits. The 19-year-old Stuart Murdoch-led indie pop band from Glasgow has now had nine albums to show their sound, which bounces from indie pop rock to European nostalgia to cutesy morose folk. Girls in Peacetime Just Want to Dance, their latest album that dropped Jan. 21, is no exception to this undefinability. It’s not vintage Belle, but they’re not exactly trying something new either. Under a new producer and five years removed from their last album, 2010’s Write About Love, the band is aging in reverse to come out with their most pop-infused and dance-obsessed record to date that still plays honest and timeless lyrics.

Polls: Which professor should you take?

(11/07/14 8:16am)

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Spring registration is upon us. It's often said that the choice of a course instructor is more important than the choice of the course itself. Registration has been delayed for a weekend, leaving more time to fine-tune one's bookbag contents. Below is a list of common courses and the professors teaching them next semester. If you have taken any of the classes or professors, vote and help other students make the right decisions when it comes to scheduling this Spring… before it's too late.#qp_main166439 .qp_btna:hover input {width:80px}
