Big goals require little improvements every day, and that was reflected by No. 20 Duke's play at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate held in Hilton Head, S.C. Over the three-day event at the par-71 Long Cove Club, Duke was able to improve on its score each round, moving up to 10th place by the end of the event.

CHAPEL HILL—The stage was set for a perfect revenge plot. The storyline could’ve been the Blue Devils dominate the 18th-ranked Tar Heels on their Senior Day at North Carolina’s Carmichael Arena, avenging their loss and carrying that momentum into the ACC tournament.

2021 was another ho-hum year for head coach Dan Brooks and company, as Gina Kim was the ACC individual medalist, Duke won the ACC team title and the program reached the NCAA semifinals out in Arizona. But heading into this campaign, things are different for the Blue Devils. Longtime stalwarts Kim and Jaravee Boonchant have turned pro, leaving juniors Erica Shepherd and Megan Furtney as the most experienced members of the program. Losing Kim and Boonchant—the former of whom announced her decision to move on to the LPGA just last month—will surely bring about challenges in the early portion of the season. But the early returns this semester have still been promising, despite some iffy weather in January.

No. 9 Duke returned to Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday to play Wake Forest for the second time this season. Both teams started out with sloppy play, but the Blue Devils ultimate pulled ahead to take a 42-33 lead at the half. Here are five of our observations from the opening period.

The Blue Devils committed a sacrilege Sunday afternoon in the Cathedral of College Basketball in a 77-55 victory over non-conference opponent Penn. After taking down then No. 9 Iowa, Duke was poised to continue its undefeated start over the Ivy League program. While there were little doubts that the Blue Devils would emerge victorious, the Quakers exposed the many strengths and weaknesses of head coach Kara Lawson's roster ahead of the highly anticipated matchup against No. 1 South Carolina on Dec. 15.

Munching down on her routine pre-tournament breakfast of bacon, egg and toast, Jaravee Boonchant scrolls through her music library, trying to find the perfect beat to get herself into a rhythm before tee-off. Of course, she superstitiously skips over “Loser” by BIGBANG in her playlist, a song she blames for a loss in high school.

There’s a lot for the Duke women’s golf team to be concerned about. While the Blue Devils technically enter this season as reigning national champions, much of their title-winning squad from 2019 is gone. Duke did not play at all during the fall due to COVID-19 concerns. The team’s lone senior, Jaravee Boonchant, stayed in her native Thailand during the entire fall semester.
