Guantanamo Bay expert critical of decision to keep camp open

Peter Jan Honigsberg, professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law, is the founder and director of Witness to Guantanamo, a project that works to document the realities of the Guantanamo Bay detention center. Since the project began in 2008, Honigsberg and his team have visited 20 countries and interviewed 136 people, including prison guards, interrogators, medical personnel, lawyers, military and government officials, chaplains, relatives and 50 detainees.

David Sanger, chief Washington correspondent for The New York Times, touched upon cyberwarfare, the Iran nuclear deal and President Barack Obama's foreign policy at a discussion titled “An Obama Scorecard: Cyber, Nuclear Proliferation and Geopolitical Instability” Thursday night at the Sanford School of Public Policy.



Q&A: Alum Macon Phillips discusses role in Obama ‘08 campaign

Macon Phillips, Trinity ‘00, is the coordinator of the Bureau of International Information Programs in the U.S. State Department. He became involved in President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign as the deputy director of the campaign’s new media department. He later worked as the new media director for the presidential transition team and later as the special assistant to the president and director of digital strategy. Phillips spoke with The Chronicle’s David Wohlever about his role in the State Department, his work during the campaign, his time at Duke and how college students can get involved in politics.




Q&A: David Ferriero goes from Duke's university librarian to national archivist

David Ferriero, former head of the University's library system, is the 10th Archivist of the United States and will deliver the Founders' Day address Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Page Auditorium. Ferriero worked in the library system at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 31 years, then after serving as university librarian at Duke from 1996-2004 became Andrew W. Mellon director of the New York Public Libraries. Now 69, he was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009 as national archivist, becoming the first librarian ever to fill the role. Before Ferriero's return to Durham Friday, The Chronicle’s David Wohlever spoke with him about his role as archivist, the impact of digitalization on record-keeping and his time at Duke.
