The pursuit of wellness

Life as a Duke student can feel surreal—from morning rock climbs and lunches with Nobel laureates to nights cheering on the most storied basketball program in college sports, capped off with twilights in Perkins. With the surplus of opportunities on our campus far outpacing the number of hours in a day, many students are told early on to “pick two”: school, sleep, and social life. Forget about every achieving all three. As a result, personal health and wellbeing often take a backseat on campus, as students race between scholastic and social extremes.

Bridging classrooms and communities: Intellectual engagement at Duke

This year, Duke Student Government (DSG) began the Student Leader Steering Committee, in the hopes of harmonizing student priorities with administrator work streams to improve the undergraduate experience. Our monthly meetings have convened students from different pockets of campus for a conversation with a senior university leader around a big-picture issue facing Duke—from construction, to classrooms, to curriculum. These discussions have been open forums for student concerns and incubators for ideas of how to change our university for the better—from giving students the opportunity to design Duke’s next dorm to responding to undergraduate feedback about how to improve the dining experience.

Beyond the classroom: intellectual engagement at Duke

The first meeting of the Duke Student Government (DSG) Steering Committee focused on “constructing community,” with the roundtable centering on recent and future changes to campus facilities. Student leaders voiced their thoughts on current infrastructure and offered suggestions for the design of new buildings. The most important takeaway was how Duke’s spaces become starting points for relationships, experiences, and communities. As President Brodhead said, “We take trouble with physical structures because they serve the real construction project this great university is engaged in: the building of capable men and women, eager to deliver their promise in the life of their times.” It was with this thought in mind that the DSG Steering Committee convened its second meeting, focusing on the intellectual foundations that Duke aims to provide for every student. The group—which included the student leaders of flagship programs (e.g. DukeEngage) as well as core academic organizations (e.g. majors unions)—was joined by Dr. Steve Nowicki, the Dean and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, for a conversation about intellectual engagement on campus.
