No more happy endings in Hollywood: Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’ 'amicable' decoupling

(10/22/23 11:10am)

The Turner-Jonas divorce, while seemingly another tally in the long list of celebrity decouplings this year, appears to have instigated a much more pernicious discourse. Even Taylor Swift, the patron saint of public breakups, did not receive nearly as much attention following her split from Joe Alwyn, and certainly not as many accusations from both the media and her ex-partner. Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber: Cyber attack or fangirl fantasy?

“Jelena” was (and is) a defining element of the pop-culture zeitgeist of the 2010s. From Justin Beiber and Selena Gomez’s first date in 2010 to their final break in 2018, fans and haters alike were dialed into the couple’s activities, event appearances, twitter feuds and paparazzi-captured kisses. Five years later, however, with Bieber now married to Hailey Baldwin and Selena single but ever-beloved by her supporters, new lines are being drawn, and it is unclear whether they are between fans or the celebrities themselves.

It follows a format characteristic of streaming-era young-adult dramedies: at the center, a teenage girl of color, usually a “misfit,” struggles to navigate friends, romance, school and family. She braves the trials and tribulations of adolescence with her BFFs while struggling with her own greater demons. The all-inclusive twist on this trope is a plot that drops curated moments of racism, misogyny or other forms of discrimination in a surface-level attempt to provide social commentary.
