In more normal times, the week of Lunar New Year brings festivities for many at Duke.
As a kid growing up in San Francisco, Cosmos Lyles, Pratt ‘95, loved to frequent the local burrito restaurants. When he eventually moved across the country to enroll at Duke in 1991, the dearth of California burritos in Durham hit him especially hard.
Michael Tan is a Trinity senior majoring in economics and statistics with a certificate in philosophy, politics and economics. As a participant in the bSchool (Book School) program of the Creator Institute, Tan wrote and will publish a novel, "The Death of Uncertainty," under the mentorship of Professor Eric Koester at Georgetown University. The novel explores themes of free will and adversity in a society where an artificial intelligence algorithm enables people to make the optimal decision in every situation. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Michael Tomasello, Trinity ’72, is the James F. Bonk professor of psychology and neuroscience. His new book, “Becoming Human: A Theory of Ontogeny,” draws upon his three decades of research into social cognition and developmental processes in toddlers and great apes to articulate what differentiates humans from other primates. “Becoming Human” was recently honored with the William James Award by the American Psychological Association. The Chronicle sat down with Tomasello to discuss his career and the impact his research has for students at Duke. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
