Duke grad student government votes to support Graduate Students Union, calls on admin to not interfere

The Graduate and Professional Student Government’s Student Affairs Committee, co-sponsored by the Duke Graduate Students Union, unanimously passed a resolution “calling for recognition of the rights of graduate students to unionize and organize a fair election without harassment or interference from Duke administration” on Monday.

Unions are formally recognized bodies of workers who join together to establish collective bargaining power in a workplace. Recognized unions at Duke span dining, publishing, transit and academics. They include the American Federation of State, Council, and Municipal Employees Local 77; the Duke Faculty Union; the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1328; and the Duke University Press Workers Union. Currently, Duke Graduate Students Union is in the process of seeking recognition. 



Duke administrative staff declined to accept demand letter from graduate students union, per organizer

Following the Duke Graduate Students Union’s Thursday rally, students attempted to deliver a letter to President Vincent Price asking Duke to voluntarily recognize the union and were told by administrative staff they could not accept it, according to an organizer.

Duke’s Graduate School announced a series of actions to combat rising living costs for Ph.D. students on Wednesday. These changes come amid continuing demands from Duke’s Graduate Students Union for greater financial support from the University.

Gun control activists gathered across the country Saturday in the wake of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Tex. that killed 19 children and two teachers. In Raleigh, the March for Our Lives event saw hundreds of North Carolinians rally in front of the State Capitol building to send lawmakers a clear message: “Enough is enough.”
