The world’s favorite foulmouthed teddy bear is returning to the entertainment world after a nine-year hiatus. Seth MacFarlane, who voiced Ted in the 2012 film and its 2015 sequel, is one of the masterminds behind the seven-episode prequel series of the same name that premieres on Peacock Jan. 11.

I’m not an army brat by any means, but I’ve moved around a fair amount. Nine different homes across six cities and three states, with five moves since the pandemic. The address on my driver’s license doesn’t match with where my credit card bills are sent, and I couldn’t confidently tell you my current zip code.

Let me start by saying I would not consider myself a theater kid. Sure, I was a kid who did theater growing up, but that’s not my whole thing (as in, I don’t know the entire script of “Hamilton” by heart, and you won’t hear me harmonizing while singing “Happy Birthday”).

No, this staff note is not an overdue response to Burger King’s Women’s Day tweet. Nor is it an impassioned defense of outdated gender norms. Instead, consider it an ode to a simple phrase we’ve all heard hundreds of times before.

A television reboot of a 1940s comic series started off as a group of high school friends investigating a mysterious death in their small town. Now in its sixth season, “Riverdale” has turned vaguely supernatural and makes just as little sense as you’d expect.

With Oscar nominations all over the media, it is easy to overlook anything film-related happening on the local front. However, the 23rd iteration of the Nevermore Film Festival, presented by Durham’s own Carolina Theatre, is a bona fide local institution that is not to be missed by anyone with a love of film — or just a free weekend.

Think of the value of three years of Duke tuition. Really, think about that amount of money. Now imagine being in debt for that much. Not because of student loans — that would be too easy — but because of a Tinder match.

Happy birthday, “High School Musical”! Sixteen years ago today, you were brought into the world on Disney Channel at 8 p.m. — 7 p.m. central. Now, you are as old as the high school juniors introduced in the first film. Oh, how time flies.

I should have known that Vanessa Hudgens was destined to make a lasting impact on the holiday movie scene ever since her iconic character Gabriella Montez was introduced to the “High School Musical” trilogy at a New Years’ party. I now know that any time a character of hers finds snow or hot chocolate, we are in for a wonderfully cheesy movie. Or two. Or three.

The introvert in me avoids it. I dreaded O-Week for this very reason. Sharing small talk with people I don’t know and will likely never run into again has always felt so trivial to me, especially at the gloriously chaotic “2025 Welcome Carnival.” Yet, I know that small talk is the polite thing to do — and sometimes the only thing you can do — so, I’ve grown to tolerate it. Plus, I would be naïve to think I’d ever be able to avoid these conversations entirely.

The idea of waking up at 7:30 on a Saturday morning did not initially appeal to me, but as soon as I started my trek to the Durham Farmers’ Market through the fall foliage with my many tote bags in hand, my main character morning had started, and I never thought twice about how early it was.

Yes, I have the last registration window, and yes, I am stressed about it. The sheer number of courses offered is as exciting as it is daunting. And the lengthy list of Trinity graduation requirements makes me feel like I must be forgetting something…

I can’t touch my toes without bending my knees, the splits are totally out of the question for me and I would not consider myself particularly zen. Still, I decided to drag myself out of bed at 8:30 on a Saturday morning to walk half an hour in the rain to the Durham Hotel to take a La Vita Yoga class with Jessica Collette. And let me tell you, I enjoyed every minute.

Entertainment Weekly calls it “the granddaddy of reality TV.” My family calls it “the only show we can all agree to watch together.” Regardless of what you call it, “Survivor” is back, and Wednesday nights are normal again after sixteen long months. And as for the show being “back and better than ever,” I cannot bring myself to admit that just yet.
