____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Johnny Dawkins has beaten out his mentor. Reid Travis committed to the Cardinal and head coach Johnny Dawkins this afternoon, beating out Duke and Minnesota. Dawkins is a former Duke basketball player and assistant under Mike Krzyzewski. "I feel Stanford University is the best option I can choose to start this new chapter in my life," Travis said. Travis, a 6-foot-8 forward, is the No. 23 player in the class of 2014, according to ESPN. His scouting report says, "He's another kid that rolls up his sleeves and goes to work, and what he may lack in sheer size or outright athleticism, he makes up for with physical strength and toughness."Last week, Duke missed out on forward Kevon Looney, who committed to UCLA. Grayson Allen remains Duke's only commit in the class of 2014. The Blue Devils still have their top targets on the board in center Jahlil Okafor and point guard Tyus Jones, who are expected to announce sometime this month. Okafor, the No. 1 player in the class, and Jones, the No. 4 player, have said on numerous occasions they plan to attend college together. Duke and Kansas are seen as the likeliest destination for that to happen.

Andre Dawkins spent a year away from the basketball team. He redshirted, but he didn’t practice. He wasn’t a part of the team picture. He watched home games from the bleachers behind the team’s bench. He played golf. He got out of shape. He finished his undergraduate degree. He cleared his head.

The most amazing thing about Tailgate was Tailgate. The second most amazing thing was that it was allowed to go on. It was Duke’s Hamsterdam: a lawless space designated for anarchy, debauchery and ultimately, underage drinking. And a lot of it. But then it was a gone, when the 14-year-old sibling of a student passed out in a Porta-Pottie. We went through the stages of grief. At first, we didn’t believe it could be true, then we were upset. We tried to think of ways to make it work. Then we were more upset. And I think only now are we reaching the stage of acceptance, as the Class of 2014—The Last of the Tailgaters—will graduate in May. Soon, there won’t be any students at Duke who experienced Tailgate. Maybe then there will start to be real student tailgating, but that’s tailgate with a lowercase ‘t’. Now, a few years removed, I thought it was time to document Tailgate. "The 14-year-old hadn’t just passed out. The 14-year-old had been left in an outhouse passed out by a sibling who had gone on without even knowing it. That sibling didn’t deserve for the sibling to still be alive." — Duke President Richard Brodhead I wanted to know how it got started and speak to the pioneers who started the wildest party Duke had. I wanted to know how it came to be that students wore crazy costumes to a football pregame. I wanted to hear the stories that could only happen at Tailgate. I wanted to speak to the administrators who condoned and regulated Tailgate before ultimately canceling it. I wanted to put Tailgate in the context of the other cultural changes going on at Duke at the time. And this is what I came up with. For better, for worse, for cheap beer, this was Tailgate.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Drury wanted to find a way to thank Duke basketball for bringing the team to Cameron Indoor Stadium for an exhibition game this weekend. The Div. II national champion Panthers led the Blue Devils at halftime but ultimately fell 81-65 Saturday afternoon. When Drury won the Div. II national championship last year, an alum gave the team some commemorative bottles of wine as a souvenir gift. And when they were looking for a way to thank Duke basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski and the program, they decided on doing the same for their token of gratitude, Drury basketball marketing and promotions coordinator Michele Boswell said. Per the Collegiate Awards Twitter account, which did the engraving, here is the gift:

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Duke's 2014 recruiting class is still an army of one.Forward Kevon Looney announced his commitment to UCLA at Milwaukee Hamilton High School Thursday afternoon. Looney did not have the announcement televised and his decision was live tweeted by his high school's Twitter account. A 6-foot-8 forward, Looney is the No. 11 ranked player in the class, according to ESPN. Looney was also considering Duke, Florida, Michigan State, Tennessee and Wisconsin. The Blue Devils had been seen as heavy favorites for most of the recruiting process, although Looney was notoriously quiet with the media from start to finish.Grayson Allen, a combo guard, is Duke's only commit thus far. Looney was viewed as potential replacement for Jabari Parker and Rodney Hood, should they choose to leave Duke early and go pro after this season. His ESPN scouting report describes him as "a combination of great athletic ability, length and skill. Can excel at a high level from either forward position. He must add strength but his upside is tremendous."Looney took his official visit to Duke in September and said he had a "great experience."Looney's decision may affect the choice of forward Reid Travis, who will announce Nov. 8. Travis is thought to favor Duke, Stanford or his home-state school of Minnesota, with Gonzaga and Notre Dame also in the mix. Duke is still awaiting the two most highly touted players in the class to say when they are going to announce. Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones, who officially visited campus last weekend, are expected to make that decision sometime in the coming weeks. Okafor, a center, and Jones, a point guard, are the No. 1 and No. 4 ranked players in the class of 2014, respectively. They have said repeatedly they intend to play college ball together, with Duke and Kansas the most likely destinations to make that happen. Justise Winslow, who also officially visited last weekend, may join the duo, though that is far from a certainty.

In a rare moment this weekend, I felt relatively old. Obviously I’m not old (relative is the operative word), just old in the way that when you’re a freshman in college and go back to visit your high school and think, “Wait, these kids are in high school? They’re so little! I never dressed like that when I was that age!”

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Former Duke basketball guard Seth Curry has been waived by the Golden State Warriors, the Associated Press reports. Curry's brother, Stephen, stars for the Warriors. Curry went undrafted and missed the NBA's Summer League with a shin injury that he played throughout his final season at Duke. He opted not to have surgery on the leg during the season, playing through it while missing most of the team's practices. He averaged 17.5 points per game as a senior, making 43.8% of his 3-pointers and 2.7 per game. Curry was healthy enough to play in six preseason games for the Warriors. In limited action, averaging 7.2 minutes per game, the 6-foot-2 guard averaged 2.2 points and 1.0 assist.
