Duke basketball steps it up on the defensive end, tops Alabama

(11/28/13 9:54am)

NEW YORK—For all the hoopla about whether Duke’s defense would continue to be so bad that the team would nearly lose games despite sporting arguably the nation’s most efficient offense, the Blue Devils hit just one field goal in the first 8:45 of play. But after two games in which Eastern Carolina and Vermont’s offenses scored at will against Duke, the defense upped the ante.

Justise Winslow commits to Duke

(11/22/13 2:41am)

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Justise Winslow is the next top recruit who has committed to Duke. Winslow, a 6-foot-5 small forward and the No. 14 recruit in the Class of 2014 according to ESPN, announced his decision Thursday at his high school, St. John's in Houston. The last day of the early signing period was yesterday, Nov. 20, so in order to officially commit Winslow would have had to submit his letter yesterday. Otherwise, he could have verbally committed and then signed during the regular period beginning April 16. He was also considering Arizona, Florida, Texas A&M and UCLA. Winslow is another big get for the Duke coaching staff after Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones—the No. 1 and No. 4 recruits in the nation—committed to the Blue Devils last Friday. Okafor and Jones were a package deal, while Winslow had said at points he was interested in playing with the duo. The trio visited Duke together Oct. 26 and attended the Blue Devils' exhibition game against Bowie State.Winslow, Okafor and Jones join guard Grayson Allen in the Blue Devils' class of 2014. “We’re ecstatic about the four young men that are coming to Duke,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a press release. “Grayson Allen committed to us very early. We believe he’s an explosive wing. Terrific offensive and defensive player. We consider Jahlil Okafor as good a big man as there is in the country, but not just a big man, we think he’s a great basketball player. He’s had an amazing amount of experience playing for the United States and for a great high school program. In Tyus Jones, I think we have the best point guard in the country. Someone who has won state championships, USA championships and is the consummate leader on the court. Justise Winslow is a great wing player. He is a guy that can guard every position and is an amazing rebounder and scorer. The great thing about all four of the kids is that they want to share a spotlight and they want to be on a great team. They’re team first guys, even though they have this excellent amount of individual talent.”After Okafor and Jones committed, Okafor and his father campaigned on Twitter for Winslow to come to Durham with #DukeNeedsJustise. Winslow and Okafor won a gold medal this summer together playing for the United States at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Prague. Winslow was the fourth-leading scorer on the team at 9.8 points per game and pulled down 6.0 boards per contest. Blue Devil guard Rasheed Sulaimon was also on that team and was AAU teammates with Winslow for Houston Hoops in high school. Winslow's ESPN scouting report says he is "an elite level glue guy that can make teammates better and do a little of everything pretty well and competes on a high level on both ends."

After Okafor and Jones commit, Winslow may decide this week; Okafor's dad helping out

(11/18/13 10:10pm)

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>In the news Duke fans have been waiting to hear for more than a year now, Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones are coming to Durham. The duo committed to Coach K and the program Friday afternoon from their respective high schools, live on ESPNU. The Blue Devils beat out Kansas and Baylor. "Duke University," Jones said as he put on a gray Blue Devil hat. "[Coach K is] a legend. He's coached for many years and he's arguably one of the greatest of all time. He's a great basketball mind and I feel like I'll be able to learn a tremendous amount under him."Okafor, a 6-foot-10 center, is the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2014, according to ESPN. Jones, a 6-foot-1 point guard, ranks No. 4 in the class and the top at his position. The duo joins guard Grayson Allen in Duke's class of 2014. And it's possible a fourth member could join the class as soon as this week. Justise Winslow, the No. 14 player in the class of 2014, may announce Wednesday, per scout.com (subscription required). Winslow visited Duke in October with Okafor and Jones and has at points stated he would like to play with them in college. He is also considering Arizona, Florida, Stanford and UCLA. Winslow would have to commit by Wednesday to officially sign during the early signing period, but he could still just verbally commit at any point and then make it official later on. The Okafor family has picked up the recruiting efforts to bring Winslow to Durham, notably Okafor's dad:

Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones commit to Duke basketball

(11/16/13 2:08am)

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Duke lost to Kansas in the Champions Classic but won big-time Friday afternoon as Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones committed to the Blue Devils and head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Their announcements, which took place simultaneously at their respective high schools, were televised live on ESPNU. Okafor, who attends Whitney Young in Chicago, and Jones, who attends Apple Valley in Minnesota, had stated their intentions to be a package deal for a long time. The other frontrunner for their services was Kansas, with Baylor as the only other school that they were both considering. Okafor was in attendance Tuesday as the Jayhawks beat the Blue Devils 94-83 in Chicago. "Duke University," Jones said as he put on a gray Blue Devil hat. "[Coach K is] a legend. He's coached for many years and he's arguably one of the greatest of all time. He's a great basketball mind and I feel like I'll be able to learn a tremendous amount under him."

Jahlil Okafor, Tyus Jones announce today at 4 p.m.

(11/15/13 9:25pm)

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Perhaps the biggest recruiting announcement in Duke basketball history is only hours away. Jahlil Okafor, the No. 1 player in the class of 2014 per ESPN, and Tyus Jones, the No. 4 player, will announce their college decisions at 4 p.m. EST on ESPNU. They have repeatedly stated they intend to play college ball together and will finally reveal their choice at their respective high schools—Whitney Young and Apple Valley—this afternoon. They are both considering Duke, Kansas and Baylor, with most people believing the decision is down to the Blue Devils and Jayhawks. On 247Sports.com, 88% of the recruiting analysts predict Okafor will come to Duke. That number is 90% for Jones. But it's tough to really trust experts, when their parents supposedly don't even know where they will go. In one of the more interesting prediction posts, USA Today's Jason Jordan asked other top recruits where they believe the duo will go. Those who predicted Duke: Joel Berry (class of 2014, UNC commit), Montaque Gill-Caesar (2015, uncommitted), Grayson Allen (2014, Duke), Harry Giles III (2016, uncommitted), Malik Newman (2015, uncommitted), Myles Turner (2014, uncommitted) and Ivan Rabb (2015, uncommitted).Giles visited Duke on Countdown to Craziness last year with Okafor and Jones and tells Jordan, "When I was there with them they had a really good vibe with Coach K. I think Duke is the school for them. I'm going to say Duke!"Those who predicted Kansas: Devin Booker (2014, Kentucky), D'Angelo Russell (2014, Ohio State), Stanley Johnson (2014, uncommitted) and Kelly Oubre (2014, Kansas). Johnson, the No. 9 player in the class, is also announcing today. Arizona is the supposed favorite for his services. Perhaps more notably, Cliff Alexander—the No. 3 player in the class—is revealing his decision as well. His choice is more intertwined with the Okafor-Jones decision because most people think his decision is down to Kansas and Illinois. It's unclear if Alexander and Okafor, both big men, would want to play at the same school. These announcements all come after Duke has missed out on forwards Kevon Looney and Reid Travis in the last two weeks. Travis committed to Stanford and Looney went for UCLA. Wait! Okafor actually announced already on YouTube!
