If there’s a reason I’ve contributed as much as I have to The Chronicle in four years, it’s because of a desire for truth. I think we reporters serve a real purpose in bringing topics to light that deserve the light—I have proudly seen my friends write about sexual harassment, Tallman Trask and even Pitchforks at its prime hour, 2 a.m. on a Sunday.

ORLANDO, Fla.—Two years ago, an upstart Duke team beat veteran Florida State to advance to the national championship. Friday night, the Blue Devils were the veteran team, returning 15 players from the 2015 runner-up squad and facing a starting lineup of eight underclassmen.

Duke head coach Robbie Church usually makes calculated superlatives. He does not say that his team is his best ever, just that it is the most consistent. Asked about Rebecca Quinn throughout the season, he spoke extremely highly of her, but still held back.

One might think that after Duke beat Virginia 1-0 to claim the ACC regular-season title, and then celebrated quite animatedly in the locker room, that perhaps the Blue Devils would come out flat and overconfident against Boston College.

It would be hard to know it now, since Duke has been a national contender the past 15 years.

The Chronicle's Jack Dolgin examined a part of football many punters, including Duke's Austin Parker, struggle with—pinning teams inside their own 20 yard-line. Parker has on average pinned opponents to their 18-yard line when punting from the 50 yard-line or closer to the opponent's goal line. In contrast, punters playing against the Blue Devils during his career have on average pinned Duke to the 15-yard line. The question was whether not being able to kick the ball far would actually be an advantage, so Dolgin wondered whether he, a former high school soccer player, could pin opponents even better than some NCAA punters in short-distance punting situations. You can watch the video for the full story.

John Koskinen had never seen anything like it. Neither had Herb Neubauer, better known as Crazy Towel Guy, or Duke head coach John Kerr, all fixtures at Blue Devil soccer games for the last 30 years.
