Letter: K-Ville, step up your game!

(01/24/20 5:00am)

Two years ago, I took my wife to the Clemson vs. Duke game in Cameron and was surprised to find that I was able to buy a ticket behind the benches in what used to be student-only seating. My first response was to be disgusted with my alma mater, assuming they had kicked students out of these seats so they could sell them.  I then found out that the most likely truth was that the students simply weren’t filling these seats, even for conference home games. Last night I witnessed with embarrassment a “TV-side” student section that was empty from the baseline extended! For a home conference game vs. Miami (who has beat us five times in recent years) on ESPN. Unbelievable.  A full, loud, and appropriately rowdy student section has been a key ingredient to success for the past forty years.  Don’t take victory for granted.  Y'all need to step up your game.

Michael Tan is a Trinity senior majoring in economics and statistics with a certificate in philosophy, politics and economics. As a participant in the bSchool (Book School) program of the Creator Institute, Tan wrote and will publish a novel, "The Death of Uncertainty," under the mentorship of Professor Eric Koester at Georgetown University. The novel explores themes of free will and adversity in a society where an artificial intelligence algorithm enables people to make the optimal decision in every situation. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

How do you build community at Duke?

(03/25/19 4:00am)

After reading two fellow columnists’ articles concerning affiliation at Duke, I was disheartened. One columnist detailed his disappointment with his social experiences as an independent, and one columnist justified the exclusive nature of Greek life with the assertion of the exclusivity of life in general. While exclusivity and hierarchy are realities, there is no reason that Duke’s social climate need look like the rest of the world. In fact, I believe we as a student body, especially independents, have the power to make Duke’s campus an inclusive and welcoming place, even building it to be a microcosm of what we want our world to look like.
