K-Ville Zero Waste program educates students on composting, reduces waste on game days

(03/01/22 6:19am)

On game days, the trash bins in Krzyzewskiville quickly become filled with an unappetizing mixture of food scraps, disposable containers and plastic cups. A student-run initiative is helping to divert K-Ville’s compostable waste before it reaches landfills.

Krzyzewskiville: a more perfect meritocracy?

(02/16/22 5:00am)

Sometimes said pejoratively, sometimes shocking in the frankness of its usage, meritocracy is on the minds of those of us at a place like Duke. Coined in a 1950s satire by sociologist Michael Young, the societal co-opting of this term with such verve and ubiquity almost makes me worry that perhaps it serves more to normalize undesirable societal outcomes than warn against them. But, regardless of the intentions of the creation of the word, our segment of society has come to highly value how achievements are earned and deserved.

Coach K, will you accept this rose? Former Bachelorette contestants attend Duke men's basketball game

(01/27/22 3:31pm)

Greg Grippo's time on Season 17 of The Bachelorette ended in nail-biting fashion, as Grippo, who had won the first impression rose and was clearly a frontrunner for Bachelorette Katie Thurston's heart from the start, confessed his love for Thurston in the all-important hometown dates. His baring of his heart did not go as planned, however, and the second-to-last episode ended with a fight about honesty between the two and Grippo ultimately leaving the show.

Duke 2022: What’s in and what’s out

(01/12/22 5:00am)

It is no secret that Duke is often given a bad rep for being too rigorous, not caring about its students, and so on and so forth. But, if anyone knows how to harp on this school the best—it's Duke students. A trend that was circulating on Instagram as of late was people posting their “ins” and “outs” for the new year—ins being things that they hope to keep or things that they hope happen during 2022 and outs being things that they want to leave behind in 2021. So, in the spirit of the new year and the start of a new semester, I have curated a much-needed list of ins and outs specific to Duke for 2022.

Keeping Cameron under control: The history behind K-Ville’s line monitors

(01/07/22 3:28am)

It’s gameday for Duke men's basketball in Krzyzewskiville. Hundreds of students have gathered on the lawn, holding their spots in line as they eagerly wait for the doors to Cameron Indoor Stadium to open. They know that the building doesn’t have much space in the student section, and everyone’s looking for a way inside. K-Ville is littered with evidence that the Cameron Crazies have been there for hours: sleeping bags, camp chairs, snacks and lawn games.
