Letter: In memory of Professor Peter Euben

(05/29/18 8:10pm)

When Peter Euben recently died, Duke lost one of its finest professors. When I took the first incarnation of his now-well-known "Living an Ethical Life" class during spring semester 2007, I expected conflict. The idea for the class was almost absurd: put a bunch of bright Duke kids from vastly different backgrounds holding vastly different convictions into a room together and make them read everything from Socrates to Nietzsche to the Book of Job. Then pull the pin out of the grenade and toss it into the center of the room with a question like "What does goodness look like in a world without God?"

Good ole Duke

(03/25/14 10:34am)

This year’s men’s basketball team lost its final two games to teams built on Coach K’s principles: fundamentals, toughness and team defense. The players with “Duke” across their chests played like a broken NBA team. The University of Virginia and Mercer University played like Duke, or at least the Duke we have come to know and love. Yes, prepare yourselves: I’m about to pine nostalgically for the good ‘ole days of Duke basketball.

Student fan support pathetic

(11/08/10 11:00am)

I’ve been to a lot of Duke football games over the past 12 years, but Saturday’s game marked two extremes; it was both the most exciting game I’ve seen at Wallace Wade and also the most poorly attended by Duke students. There we were, in the midst of a back-and-forth shootout with our conference foe UVA (who we had beaten the past two years) and our student section was basically empty. For all of you who braved the cold, rainy weather for Tailgate yet didn’t go to the game, shame on you. Fandom, like friendship, is tested in its painful moments... and most of you failed.

Benedict committed to Christian unity

(12/01/06 5:00am)

Emily Thomey's Nov. 30 column "A House Divided" brings up crucial issues in understanding Pope Benedict XVI, Christian ecumenism and Christian-Muslim interfaith dialogue. I worry, however, that Professor Güven Güzuldere has mischaracterized the pope. Güzeldere is correct that the pope cares deeply about ecumenical relations with Orthodoxy, but he then implies that the pope does not care deeply about ecumenical relations with Protestants.
