Mental health and people of color: A quiet conversation

(10/10/17 2:13pm)

When looking at communities of color, there are often harsh stigmas against mental health. New research has shown that students of color are much less likely to ask for help when they’re stressed or coping with other mental health concerns than white students. Two organizations, The Jed Foundation, which works with colleges on suicide prevention, and the Steve Fund, which works to enhance the emotional well-being of young people of color, released data from a Harris Poll taken in 2015. The survey was conducted with 1,502 students aged 17 to 20, and the results showed that black and Hispanic students were more likely to feel overwhelmed in college, but they are also more likely than white students to keep their mental health concerns to themselves.

Adjusting to extroversion and elitism

(09/27/17 4:00am)

Like any college freshman, I had a hard time adapting to college. Although I knew college was going to be much different than high school, I was taken by surprise by the difficulty of the transition. I was more emotional the first semester of college than I had been in my last two years of high school. I didn’t realize until winter break of freshman year that I took my home for granted. Besides the comfort and familiarity that my home provided, my home gave me a strong sense of my identity, which I realized had become completely dependent on my familiarity with my surroundings..  I came to this realization when I saw my sense of self dissolving at Duke.

National news stories of black citizens being killed by cops have become more prominent, one such story occurring in Charlotte, a city that is a two-hour drive from Durham. With Duke University being an elite, well-respected institution, the question of how Duke uses its influence and power to respond to such a huge incident in its home state needs to be asked.

Changing the conversation

(09/27/16 10:00pm)

“Why does she stay?” is a question outsiders ask continuously regarding domestic violence. The situation may seem black and white to many. If someone in an abusive relationship, then the abused person should leave. However, the case of domestic violence is not as simple as some try to make it. The question “Why does she stay?” is part of the conversation of domestic violence, though there are many levels within it, but there’s another side: why does a man abuse a woman he claims to love?
