Sarah's Story

(09/24/14 8:02am)

When junior Sarah Stanczyk first arrived at Duke her freshman year, she noticed that she was constantly fighting off colds and other sicknesses passing through campus and decided to see a doctor at her home in Grand Island, N.Y. “If something was going around, I would have it,” she recalled of her freshman year. Although she was tested for various illnesses, her physician gave her a clean bill of health.

Watch List: Climb towers

(04/16/14 7:30am)

The spiraling and tedious climb to the top of the Duke Chapel certainly presents a rewarding, one-of-a-kind view of campus. However, Duke’s campus offers many other unique and spectacular views from the heights of its gargoyle-studded buildings. Though climbing these other buildings is forbidden by the Duke Community Standard, motivated Duke students have found ways to reach the top.

Watch List: Dance at Shooters II Saloon

(04/16/14 7:30am)

A Duke experience may not be complete without at least one night spent dancing at Shooters II Saloon, located within walking distance of East Campus. Taxidermy animal heads, mannequins placed near the DJ’s station, a mechanical bull and a crowded dance floor, all with the tone of the “Wild Wild West,” somehow combine to form a cohesive arena where Duke students escape from campus.

Duke's technological transformation

(02/26/14 9:30am)

College students of the 21st century rarely go a day without experiencing the benefits of modern technologies. Smart phones and the Internet provide instantaneous access to information, note-taking with a pen and notebook is nearly a remnant of the past and classrooms take advantage of sophisticated equipment to enhance students’ learning experiences. Duke’s academic culture in the past, however, was drastically different from the tech-savvy campus that students know now.

Watch List: Sophomore Academic Homecoming

(02/26/14 9:30am)

Sophomore year can be an exciting but stressful whirlwind for Duke students. In addition to relocating from East Campus to either West or Central Campus, sophomores must declare a course of study from among the University's 50 majors, 47 minors and 24 interdisciplinary certificates. Sophomore Academic Homecoming, a new tradition initiated by the Sophomore Class Council, the University's administration, Duke Student Government and the Academic Advising Center, aims to turn this hyped-up decision into a celebration.

Watch List: Sarah P. Duke Gardens

(09/26/13 6:02pm)

When the stress level in the library has reached its peak or the Plaza poses too many distractions, many Duke students find sanctuary in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. With 55 acres of foliage and botanical beauty, the Duke Gardens is a majestic natural maze which many Duke students use as a jogging course, a place to picnic or a secluded study spot away from the hustle and bustle of campus. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a great blue heron, or ducklings in the spring.
