Book Review: 300

(03/08/07 5:00am)

300, the graphic novel and inspiration for the new movie by the same name, is a vividly illustrated tale of Sparta's last stand against the armies of Xerxes in 480 B.C. The account of Leonidas and his army of 300 Spartans by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley becomes a gripping, bloody adult graphic novel featuring simplistic, no-nonsense dialogue and dark, yet elaborate illustrations. Fans will notice the similarities between this illustration and the style used in Sin City, another of Miller's works later adapted for the big screen.

Heal the world

There are lots of problems on earth today that we just can’t seem to figure out solutions for (like the flu or the rubiks cube). Our politicians, leaders and Sally Struthers all give us possible solutions, but for some reason these problems just don’t go away. So as we go into exam time and winter break, I decided to address some of the most detrimental situations that currently plague our little spherical garden of Eden and attempted to provide some fun hands-on solutions for our media-crazed American minds.

You're such a 4.0

I bought a lamp at this thrift store in Durham. Because of its lack of luster, I took to it a bottle of Windex and some napkins I stole from The Loop. BAM! Genie time! I’m not kidding. Robin Williams circa 1992 animated film about sultans in Arabia just spilled into my Craven Quad dormitory. At first I thought the blue guy was just another Cameron Crazy off to root for Dockery when I realized the next basketball game wasn’t until a week from now and no one paints himself for a football game. Anyway, it wasn’t a Crazy, but rather a bluish genie with a devilish grin and three wishes to grant. Go me.

Be a Toys 'R' Us kid

Some people say that when you look into a child’s eyes you can see the future. Now normally after those people say something like that, we usually ask them whether they have taken their pills, and most of the time, their response is, “No, not yet.” But regardless of whether those people had neurotic disorders, there is probably some truth in that statement.

Learn something

A wise man once said, ignorance is bliss. (Which is ironic because only a ‘wise’ man would know this. An ignorant man would be too busy hunting for food to sit and ponder life’s happiness). That wise man, also known as Copernicus or Romulus or somethingelse-us, was totally right.
