If head coach David Cutcliffe wanted to test his team’s improvement over the past few years, he sure picked the right schedule.
Make no doubt about it -- perennial All-Stars Lebron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade are the biggest prizes for NBA teams across the country this summer. However, any Blue Devil fan will notice that a few of their own are making quite a splash in this year’s free agency.
Just as Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski makes his return to the National Championship game, rumors are beginning to purport as to his future plans. According to recent reports from USA Today, the New Jersey Nets new owner, billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, will make Krzyzewski an offer upwards of 15 million dollars per year to coach the Nets, making him the highest paid coach in the NBA. Phil Jackson, who currently holds that rank, makes a mere 12 million dollars per year. If Prokhorov has his way, Krzyzewski will be coaching last college game tonight against Butler.
In the state of North Carolina, the Duke-UNC rivalry is famous for its ability to put neighbors and friends at odds with one another, but how often does the rivalry separate a family?
For Jon Scheyer, the 2009-2010 season was highlighted by his breakthrough performance. He averaged career highs in points (18.9), assists (5.2), free throw percentage (0.889) and three-point field goal percentage (0.399). He was instrumental in anchoring the nation’s best trio players in himself, Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler. Throughout the season, he led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio. Many considered him in contention for multiple national awards, let alone the frontrunner for ACC Player of the Year.
Not everybody in the student section was wearing Duke apparel on Saturday night. A quick scan of the student section will reveal one man wearing a “Presbyterian College” sweater amongst a crowd of Cameron Crazies.
The Blue Devils put on a phenomenal performance for the Cameron Crazies last night, exploding on the Tar Heels on their way to an 82-50 victory, the second most lopsided in this rivalry. While they were busy celebrating, four ESPN experts were sitting on a makeshift stage on the cobblestone entrance to Cameron Indoor, discussing the Blue Devils’ performance and it’s impact come Selection Sunday.
After a 6-of-7, 15-point performance Monday night against North Carolina Central University, junior guard Karima Christmas had another great game against the Temple Owls, leading Duke to a 70-63 victory with career highs 23 points and 14 rebounds. Duke now owns a 5-0 record against Temple, and has won six straight games on New Years Eve.
After last night’s performance, I think it’s safe to say that Duke has the best women’s basketball program in Durham. The Blue Devils defeated their neighboring rivals, N.C. Central, 117-28 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Cornell head coach Jim Knowles will leave his alma mater to become the new defensive coordinator at Duke, multiple Ithaca newspapers reported Wednesday. He will replace Mike MacIntyre, who recently left Duke to take the head man's job at San Jose State.

No. 15 Gonzaga is expected to return senior guard Matt Bouldin as it travels to Madison Square Garden to play the Blue Devils Saturday at 4 p.m.in the Bulldogs' biggest non-conference game of the season. Duke defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre, the the AFCA's 2009 assistant coach of the year, was announced as San Jose State's head coach Wednesday. He will be formally introduced in a news conference on Thursday. MacIntyre served two seasons under head coach David Cutcliffe, whom he also worked with at Ole Miss.
