Re: Something to think about...

(01/27/19 4:38pm)

My dad recently told me that he had downloaded Grammarly, one of those softwares that checks the grammar of your emails for you. Up until this point, ensuring perfect grammar in my dad’s emails was my job. It was a tedious task, one that many first-generation Americans dutifully carry out at the request of their immigrant parents. I was hardly a fan of this chore. But what really frustrated me about this task was scrolling through the conversation to find that emails from my dad’s colleagues, subordinates and supervisors alike were littered with careless typos and grammatical transgressions worthy of Donald Trump’s tweets. It was clear that the effort my dad and I put into perfecting his emails was leaps-and-bounds beyond that of his (mostly white, American) colleagues.

The Republican Identity: Patriot or Insurgent?

(04/02/18 4:27am)

One has to wonder what would drive the Duke College Republicans to host an event called “The American Muslim Identity: Patriot or Insurgent?” After all, since this is the same party that decries identity politics so clearly, I doubt the talk is meant to help Duke students better understand the relationship between American Muslims and the Republican party.

Accepting the unacceptable

(02/20/18 4:12pm)

It took me until the most recent mass shooting (as of this writing) in Parkland, Florida to realize what I had been missing regarding the response to these gruesome, but increasingly commonplace, events. It required me to break out of my echo chamber of liberal voices which called for “gun control,” a phrase which conservatives seemingly interpret as former President Barack Obama coming door to door to confiscate their guns. I had to really listen to the responses from the right, from those who argue that now is not the time to discuss political solutions to these repeated tragedies, and from those who’d never venture to take away a gun from someone but wouldn’t bat an eye when snatching away healthcare from millions. And what I finally realized is that Republicans are simply at a place the rest of us haven’t reached yet.

The weight of the letters

(02/06/18 6:24am)

The rush of rush has come and gone. The debaucheries of bid day Shooters have eroded the obsequious niceties that freshmen display to the brothers in charge of their fate. Tasks of varying utility, ranging from memorizing preambles and lists of Greek letters to standing awkwardly in an unfilled C1 (with or without a watermelon in tow) have begun. A fresh group of freshmen have joined fraternities and I wonder if they’re aware of the obligations that doing so entails.

A year that will live in infamy

(01/22/18 5:00am)

In an otherwise cacophonous presidency, there is some poetic beauty in the anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration being marked by an embarrassing government shutdown, brought on by Trump’s unprecedented—but completely unsurprising—incompetence. Indeed, the lead up to this shutdown succinctly encapsulates the three hallmarks which have defined Trump’s life and now his administration: a pathological propensity for lying, a glaring inability to lead, and an unapologetic bent for racial bigotry.

If it sounds too bad to be true, it probably isn’t

(08/10/15 8:37am)

Given what the recent columns opposing the nuclear deal with Iran have stated, it would seem that Secretary of State John Kerry and the U.S. diplomatic team suffered an embarrassing defeat when negotiating the Iran nuclear deal. The facts of the situation reveal that wasn’t quite the case, although more than a cursory glance at headlines is required to see this.

(10/06/14 10:16am)

Duke sent members to compete on opposite sides of the country this past week, with senior Ester Goldfeld and sophomore Alyssa Smith playing at the ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. while the rest of the team matched up against Princeton, Columbia and others at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton N.J.

Irving, Plumlee flourish in Spain as Team USA advances to knockout round

(09/05/14 9:01am)

Team USA dominated group play at the FIBA World Cup, winning its five games by an average of 33.2 points. Former Duke standouts Mason Plumlee and Kyrie Irving are on the team, and here's a look at how the former Blue Devils have performed for Duke and Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski, as well as other highlights from the group stage:
