editor's note

(10/16/08 4:00am)

Because of the success of political commentary in this space-especially among members of the Duke Conservative Union-we've decided to bring it back this week. If you're an average Duke student, you probably got wasted playing debate-themed drinking games ("Maverick!"), so for the blacked-out, here's a recap of the key moments in the night:

Blue Devils fall at home

(01/10/08 9:00am)

The Blue Devils headed into their ACC season opener Wednesday with a 4-4 record and looking to upset reigning conference champion N.C. State. Duke jumped to an early lead in the match, winning three of the first four matches. But the Blue Devils (4-5 0-1 in the ACC) were unable to hold on, dropping the next six to ultimately fall 27-10 to the Wolfpack (5-5, 1-0) Wednesday in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke grapplers Voris Tejada, Addison Nuding and Aaron Glover all racked up major decision wins in the 157, 165 and 174 pound classes, respectively. With seconds left in his match, Glover took down N.C. State grappler Ryan Goodman to seal the win and put Duke ahead, 10-6, in the contest. The Blue Devils, however, were unable to hold on to their momentum against their in-state rivals. Despite giving a valiant effort after suffering an injury during the match, 184-pounder John Barone failed to battle back for the win. The Wolfpack grapplers took the next five straight contests en route to the team victory. Duke will take a break from ACC action Friday when the team travels to New York City for the New York Athletic Club Duals. The Blue Devils take on Davidson and Princeton in a tri-meet format.

ROMAN CANDLE comes to Duke Coffeehouse

(01/18/07 5:00am)

Roman Candle just can't catch a break. Sure, their indepently-released debut Says Pop (Outlook) was released in 2002 to critical acclaim, leading Rolling Stone to dub them "explosive new darlings." But after being tossed around by their first major label and watching their second fold just days ago, the Chapel Hill-based rockers are once again living in label limbo. Don't feel too sorry for them, though-their 2006 release, The Wee Hours Revue (V2), has been lauded as one of the year's most intelligent, well crafted albums. recess' Eric Bishop spoke with frontman Skip Matheny about pop music, surviving the music industry and the band's uncertain future.

Convocation in brief

(08/25/06 4:00am)

Students, as for you, men and women of the Class of 2010-the Double Dimes, as my internet spies tell me you have dubbed yourselves: if this day is harsh for others, it's great for you. Today you are promoted: you are the premier attraction here, the person it's all about. This summer I've run into a number of you as you whiled away the days waiting for school to start. I met future Dukies in Hong Kong, in Taiwan, in Korea and in Beijing. I spent an evening with 70 or 80 of you from the slightly less distant Durham and Wake counties. I've greeted many of you as you tromped off in preorientation trips to the woods, or to the ocean (welcome back, Pirates of the Carolinas), or to do good works in Durham. On all the migratory routes that brought you here, I've seen one thing in your faces: pride that you are about to enroll in one of the world's great universities; a look of shining promise and eager anticipation; a sense that some great thing is about to begin.

Trumpeter jazzes up Duke

(04/06/06 4:00am)

Trumpeter Terence Blanchard and his smoking sextet swing into town this week as part of Duke Performances' April ARTSfest. Blanchard is a veteran of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Grammy winner and composer of numerous film scores-including Spike Lee's Barbershop-and his 2005 album Flow (Blue Note) was produced by jazz great Herbie Hancock. recess' David Graham talked to Blanchard to get the low-down on Hurricane Katrina, the record industry and working with Herbie Hancock.

Durham After Dark

(09/01/05 4:00am)

With Parizade’s no longer moonlighting as a college destination and off-campus houses off limits, Duke students will need to broaden their scope in search of after-hours entertainment this fall. Never fear, recess has scoured Durham’s “dark side” for hours so you can skip the riff-raff and head straight to the late night sweet spots. From hot music venues to chill lounges, recess has found the quintessential atypical locales you’ll want to check out before the masses flock their way.

I think the Duke football team will be more competitive with opponents, and I do believe Coach Roof has made and will continue to make progress with this football program. That being said, given the considerable strength of the ACC as a conference, it is unrealistic to believe this team will win with any consistency this year. But that does not mean the team won’t be better than last year.
