I remember it like it was yesterday. Only a few weeks into my new position as a columnist last year, a beautiful girl named Emily Melson came up to me and thanked me for inspiring her to apply to medical school. While trying desperately to hold back tears (to no avail), she explained how she had given up on even applying to medical school because of the daunting admissions standards. However, she decided that my being chosen as a Chronicle columnist proved that truly anything is possible.

My uncle Seymour was a man ahead of his time (nearly four months premature, to be exact). For that reason, few people could understand most of what he said. Growing up with Uncle Seymour, however, bestowed upon me the rare ability to appreciate and learn so much from a man who had lived a nearly flawless life as a corn farmer of 34 years.

When I rolled out of bed early one morning to get ready for my 11:40 a.m. class and looked up at myself in the bathroom mirror, my grogginess suddenly vanished, and I dropped my toothbrush in terror. I stared at my reflection for a solid 10 minutes, but nothing changed. The person in the mirror had a gray hair.

I pulled into the Wilson parking lot behind the tennis courts and into the spot closest to Cameron, right next to Coach K's car. Already excited to be going to my first-ever Duke homecoming football game, I was even more thrilled after scoring the best parking spot on campus. As soon as I got out of the car, however, I heard a low voice shout in my direction.

It was hard just to keep my hands from shaking long enough just to choke down my breakfast that morning. I had been waiting for this day all year--no, I had been waiting a lifetime. It was finally my chance

It seems as if the current buzz on campus suggests that job or graduate school interviews are the "in thing" right now. Not wanting to feel left out, this past weekend, I too decided to buy a cheap suit and hop on a flight to New York in order to try my hand at entering the real world.

As I walked into 323 Alspaugh on the first day of move-in freshman year to admire my new home, I was greeted by a fat kid sitting Indian-style on what would later be considered my bed, with a bucket of fried chicken resting in between his legs. He wasn't wearing a shirt. In fact, he wasn't wearing anything. They say not to judge a book by its cover. But in the case of Eddie, I'd say that the double chin and stretch marks did him adequate justice.

More than just another pretty face on campus, Scotty Shaw could appropriately be called one of Duke's most inspiring students. Scotty's life epitomizes the notion that anything is possible. For that reason, I, like so many of my peers, am proud to call Scotty Shaw my role model.

Anyone who is still following the NBA finals at this point in the season has probably heard the analysts' predictions. Sure, the Cavs might last five or six games against the Spurs, but in the end Cleveland stands little chance.

It seems like the "in" thing to do this summer is to go out into the world and find a job. Whether it be an internship somewhere across the country, or a job busing tables somewhere close to home, everyone I know already seems to be employed and happily working away.

The sweat that streamed down the side of my face, forming a puddle on the bathroom floor beneath me, was partly due to the humidity of that sticky April evening and partly due my intense concentration. The tension from my clenching jaw made my teeth grind together fiercely, and my hands were compressed so tightly that they became bright red and my knuckles hurt.

Getting that fat envelope in the mail from Duke Admissions two years ago came as more of a surprise to me than I imagine it would for most students. First, the letter wasn't addressed to me. It was addressed to someone named Julian Colbert. Knowing that this was probably just a clerical error, I thought nothing of it. What was much more confusing, however, is that I couldn't remember ever applying to Duke, or anywhere else, for that matter. According to my guidance counselor, I wasn't exactly "college material."

Before I got to Duke, I had never driven an actual car. In fact, the only time I had ever even ridden in one was on my 12th birthday when Uncle Seymour drove me into the city to buy my first pair of shoes. The car he drove had one horsepower. and that horse had three legs. Still, you'd be surprised how fast Skippy could get going with a little help from a tailwind.

This was more than a rivalry. It was a deep-seeded hatred that spanned the generations. Everyone from my high school in Kent, Ohio, hated anyone from the neighboring city's high school to the north. Hudson.

I started planning for Valentine's Day a little early this year. I figured that at the rate I usually work, in order to have a date by the 14th I would need to start my hunt by late October.

I'll admit it. I fell victim to "rush fever" again this year after I saw all the excitement that rush was bringing to everyone else around campus. Those who know me best were a little surprised to hear this given the experience I had with rush only one year ago. But for some reason, I felt ready to jump head first back into the waters this year-arm floaties and all.

One cool morning last fall, I woke up at the crack of dawn to catch the 7:30 C-1. Trying to admire the scenery on the ride, I noticed a flyer posted on the bus that read, "Chances are, someone on the bus has chlamydia. Get tested today."
