GREENSBORO — Frank Cornely proved once again that he knows how to be a champion.
On a night that was supposed to belong to seniors Daniel Ewing and Reggie Love, junior J.J. Redick stole the show.
After winning the ACC regular season title last season, Duke struggled throughout its 2004-2005 campaign on the way to a 9-5 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the conference, good for fourth place.
Pins and a missed opportunity were the downfall for the Duke wrestling team against N.C. State (8-8, 3-3 in the ACC) Wednesday night. The Wolfpack secured two key pins early in the match, and Duke (9-5, 2-3) was unable to overcome a 19-0 deficit on the way to a 25-18 loss.

With his team already down 14-0 to North Carolina Tuesday night, Duke’s Antwone Floyd scored a quick takedown on Chris Ramos. Twenty seconds later, Ramos got to his feet, and instead of trying to bring him back to the mat, Floyd let him go. He would not score again and Ramos took a 10-2 major decision to increase UNC’s lead to 18.
Though any sporting event that pits Duke against North Carolina is traditionally considered a rivalry, in wrestling the matchup is more like a feud between a younger and older brother.
Shelden Williams scored on put-backs and created his own shot, notching a double-double by the halftime break. Virginia Tech doubled teamed Williams in the second half, allowing J.J. Redick and Daniel Ewing to score from the perimeter as Duke topped 100 points for the first time this season.

The wrestling team emerging from break has a different look to it than the one that went into it.

With three of their top starters missing, the Blue Devils had strong individual performances but suffered as a team from the absences.

In the final tournament of one of the most successful seasons in Duke wrestling history, four Blue Devils competed in the NCAA Championships this weekend. None of the four placed in the top eight in his respective weight class, but the team was satisfied with the way its season ended.
