A year ago on Veteran's Day, and again six months ago on Memorial Day, we joined in pointing out the University's disrespect of our classmates who served in the Armed Forces, and most particularly those who died for our nation.

Fifty years ago, Duke was a perfect fit if you were a straight white male.

The patriarch Washington Duke gave us the title for this column: Pro Bono Publico.

To the Class of 2012: Welcome to DUKE! We're so glad you're here.

Enjoy your long weekend off, summer session students, and sleep late. Although Duke will cancel classes for Memorial Day this year (a first), there's nothing remotely patriotic scheduled on campus: Monday's only events include a "Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool" show at the Nasher and "Literacy through Photography: An Exhibit of Pictures and Writing."

It seems anyone can get a college degree these days-especially if they go to North Carolina Central University.

Today marks my 58th-and final-Chronicle column as a Duke undergrad.

In January 2007, I wrote a column about the racist covenants Duke once inserted into the deeds of faculty homes in the Duke Forest. Those clauses prohibited persons of "Negro blood" from owning (or even sleeping in) 232 houses. Then in March 2007, I followed up with an even angrier missive demanding corrective action from President Richard Brodhead and his senior administrators.

A year ago this week, I offered my first annual "Notorious Alums" column. Timed in honor of Alumni Weekend, it featured some of the oddest, craziest and naughtiest ex-students to have ever donned Duke blue: A rogues' gallery of staircase murderers, attempted firebombers, conniving Mexicans, gonorrhea-infected playboys and even the 20th annual International Mr. Leather.

High-quality education is a costly thing," began President Richard Brodhead in his Feb. 29 press conference announcing a 4.8-percent bump in tuition. And with the cost of a Duke education about to top $47,985 next year, students hardly need reminding.

It will come as no surprise to Chronicle readers that I don't have much faith in the Brodhead administration. But the March 5 news that administrators are unilaterally dumping plans for a new Central Campus-plans that had been nearly 10 years in the making-in favor of a cheaper, less viable addition off West is a new low.

Although I didn't know Eve Carson, those who did have made it clear that she was the type of capable leader, dedicated student and loyal friend we all hope to be. There is no doubt that had Eve's life not been cut short at 22, there would have been no limit to what she could have accomplished, and I join the rest of the Triangle in mourning her absence from our community.

The Board of Trustees' recent decision to ban future direct investment in companies linked to the genocide in Darfur was both courageous and necessary.

Thirteen months ago, The Chronicle's editorial board had this to say about the Brodhead administration's performance during the lacrosse case: "People should not forget to recognize the adequacy of a 'good' performance in the turbulent and charged atmosphere of the last year. And in the end, history may very well judge the University's response as sensible and well executed given the constraints and competing interests at stake."

If last week's senseless murders at Northern Illinois University teach us anything, it should be that even the most comprehensive security plan can never make us "completely safe."

If I had known last week's Sex Workers' Art Show featured an "anal sparkler show" (set to the tune of "America the Beautiful," no less), I might have seriously reconsidered my decision to watch the Super Bowl instead.

It's no secret that the Durham Police Department has gotten a lot of criticism for their Gestapo-style alcohol raids and their disgraceful conduct during the lacrosse case.

Duke's Dec. 8 commitment to dramatically increase financial aid to middle- and low-income students has not gotten nearly as much attention as it deserves, probably because Harvard became the first top-tier college to eliminate loans for all undergraduates just three days later.

It would be great if the lacrosse case were "D-E-A-D, dead," as one particularly excited Towerview columnist put it. After all, I certainly never thought we'd still be talking about it nearly two years after the fact.

Since its inception in 1870, the U.S. Department of Justice has had among its chief duties "to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior" and "to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans."
