Over the past couple of weeks, Duke Student Government has been the subject of numerous articles and opinion pieces. This can be directly attributed to the fact that many controversial issues (e.g. restructuring, veto, etc.) have come to the surface. I would like to take the time right now to help clarify and add closure to some of these issues.
Welcome back to Duke University and congratulations to the Class of 2006! This is going to be a great year. Your student government has already hit the ground running, and we have a lot in store for you. Our Executive Board and Cabinet members have returned with excitement and enthusiasm, ready to better serve you. Before I tell you about specific goals and objectives, I would like to share some history with you.
I would like to thank those of you who have voiced some of your concerns about Duke Student Government, and I hope to address all of them and share my vision for next year. Regarding the head line monitor position, I chose my appointment based on three categories: managerial skills, people skills and tenting experience.
I am writing this letter in response to a Nov. 16 letter and would like to clarify a quotation of mine that was taken completely out of context. Before I explain the situation, I would like to first sincerely apologize to any and all students who may have misunderstood my intentions and my ultimate goal. My intention with my amendment at the Nov. 7 meeting was to support current Trent Drive Hall residents, and my ultimate goal as a student representative is to improve the lives and the experiences of undergraduate students in all facets.
