Your pocket guide to Duke-Lehigh

(03/17/12 1:40am)

The No. 2 Blue Devils will begin NCAA tournament play against No. 15 Lehigh tonight at 7:15 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C. The Mountain Hawks earned an automatic bid to the tournament by capturing the Patriot League tournament championship, making their second trip to the big dance in the past three seasons. Although Duke has won eight of its last 10, Lehigh enters the matchup on an eight-game winning streak of its own—Feb. 9 marks the last time the Mountain Hawks lost a game.

Follow the leader

(01/20/12 11:32pm)

Slow starts. Single-digit wins. Racking up as many turnovers as assists. Fans of the Blue Devils don’t usually associate these phrases with a team that has won three consecutive ACC Tournament championships, but Duke has experienced all of these things in the early stages of the conference slate.

Buckeye blues

(12/01/11 10:00pm)

After knocking off three quality opponents amidst the sun and surf of Maui, the Blue Devils received a rude awakening Tuesday night in Columbus at the hands of Ohio State. The Buckeyes' student section made an arena named the Value City Center about as hostile as possible, and No. 3 Duke quickly realized it wasn't in paradise anymore when No. 2 Ohio State ran out to a 11-0 lead and never trailed on the way to a blowout 85-63 victory.

Fall from Grace?

(11/07/11 8:00pm)

32-31. That was the score late in the first half of the Oct. 29 exhibition game between Duke and Bellarmine. A slow start in the Blue Devils’ first contest of the season was to be expected, but few in Cameron predicted that the reigning Division II champions would hang around for so long. Drawing blanket conclusions from 20 minutes of play in a game Duke ultimately won 87-62 would be unwise, especially since head coach Mike Krzyzewski employed a rapid-fire substitution pattern in the first half. Nonetheless, the Blue Devils’ struggles with turnovers and 3-point shooting signaled an inauspicious start to a season fraught with potential roadblocks.

Should students serve as the NCAA's police force?

(09/19/11 10:58pm)

The recent spotlight on sports scandals at major universities has rightfully raised issues about the future of the NCAA and its definitions of “amateurism” and “student-athlete.” Several writers—including Taylor Branch, Joe Posnanski and Michael Rosenberg—have published thoughtful pieces on the need for an overhaul of the NCAA rulebook as well as the pros and cons of paying college athletes. In addition to the debate over proper compensation for athletes, I believe there are other issues worth exploring within the context of the current set of NCAA rules.

FINAL: Duke 77, Virginia Tech 63, ACC Semifinals

(03/13/11 1:46am)

Duke 77-63, FINAL: That's a wrap from the Coliseum, as Duke comes away with a solid win over the Hokies. Tons of fouls called in this game, can't wait to see how many total free throws were shot. The Blue Devils now advance to the ACC tournament championship game against North Carolina tomorrow afternoon. Nolan Smith showed up in a big way this evening, shaking off a toe injury to score 27 points. Check dukechronicle.com later this evening for a game recap and make sure to keep up with the latest Duke Basketball news at sports.chronicleblogs.com as well.

Conversation With Rece Davis of ESPN's College GameDay

(02/09/11 11:11pm)

This morning I had the chance to speak with Rece Davis—host of ESPN's College Football Live pregame show and College Gameday basketball road show—about the Capital One Cup (he's a member of the advisory board), tonight's Duke-UNC basketball game, and teams who could make a run at the title during March Madness.  The following is a transcript of our conversation:

LIVE BLOG: No. 1 Duke 84, No. 6 Michigan State 79

(12/02/10 7:09am)

Duke 84, MSU 79, FINAL: Kyrie Irving finishes this one with a game-high and career-high 31 points.  But seniors Smith and Singler made clutch shots when it counted and Duke has cemented its status as the best team in college basketball.  Michigan State was exposed on the defensive end, but Duke also has some room for improvement in the area of interior defense.  And for as well as Irving played offensively, he allowed Lucious to burn him multiple times on the perimeter and will need to keep working on his lateral quickness.  Granted, Lucious and Lucas are some of the best guards in the country.  That's all for us as we get ready for postgame interviews.  Check back for the game story and game analysis tomorrow at www.dukechronicle.com.
