As we reported yesterday, a record number of students decided to "black tent" this year. Because black tenters are prohibited from using commercially produced tents, many students created elaborate structures from wood, PVC piping, and other materials. Some of these tents stood as a monument to Duke students' ingenuity and persistence.

2012 was an exciting year for Duke sports and two plays stood out to us as the most exciting of the year. Today, two of our writers will make the case for why each was the most exciting of 2012. We begin with Austin Rivers' buzzer-beating, game-winning shot against North Carolina on Feb. 8, The Miracle on Franklin Street.

Duke 69, Winston-Salem State 43 (0:45, in the second half): If Duke had been able to hit from outside, the score might have been very different. As it was, the Blue Devils missed a lot of open shots and made a blowout feel a lot closer than it needed to. The second half did not feature any of the killer runs that the first half did. The bright spots from the game were the performances of Amile Jefferson and Mason Plumlee. The lowlights: poor rebounding and poor outside shooting. Check tomorrow's Chronicle for more coverage.

Fourth Quarter (Duke 42, Virginia 17): Just three plays into the quarter, Boone hit Vernon for a 45-yard touchdown. Trailing by 18, Virginia was forced to attempt a fourth down conversion on the ensuing drive. After Cockrell picked off Sims' desperation heave at the 10 yard line, Duke began the process of running out the clock. Juwan Thompson tacked on the exclamation point with a 34-yard touchdown run that provided the final margin of victory.

Earlier this year, Duke football unveiled several new helmets, including a black helmet with a matte finish. There are several indications that they will make their debut tonight. While there has not been an official announcement, the theme for the game seems to be "All Black."

Duke could not have gotten off to a much worse start. Just 43 seconds into the season, the Blue Devils surrendered a long touchdown on a catch-and-run by Florida International running back Kedrick Rhodes. On the ensuing possession, Duke’s offense looked just as shaky, going three and out.

C.J. Costabile, who had already taken home the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award and been named a First-team All-American, received recognition as one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award Thursday night at the National Museum of the American Indian. The Tewaaraton Foundation and the University Club of Washington, D.C annually present the award to the best male and female lacrosse players in the nation. The trophy’s name comes from the Mohawk word for lacrosse and is meant to recognize the sport’s Native American origins.

The Blue Devils have made it to the season's final weekend in each of head coach John Danowski's seasons at the helm. Third-seeded Duke will look to begin its march to a sixth straight Final Four Saturday afternoon when they take on Syracuse in Koskinen Stadium.

Linebacker Kelby Brown—a rising junior—underwent a successful surgery to repair a tear in his right ACL, Duke announced Thursday. Brown, who earned academic All-ACC selection as both a freshman and a sophomore, has been an impact player when healthy, but he has also battled injuries throughout his career.
