My four years at Duke University have been characterized by political tumult and global uncertainty, undergirded by a growing mistrust in journalism—and more fundamentally, disbelief in the truth. Attacks against reporters became more common, with both online criticism and physical violence increasing in recent years. The news became “fake news.”



















Former fighter pilot, Duke prof Missy Cummings talks drones

Missy Cummings is a professor in the department of mechanical engineering and director of the humans and autonomy lab at Duke. As one of the first female Navy fighter pilots, Cummings has an intimate knowledge of aviation and the military, which she continues to incorporate in her research into human-technology interactions, as well as in her work on drone policy. The Chronicle’s Ian Jaffe sat down with her to discuss her experience and current drone policy issues.
