Billionaire funds $35M disease prevention project

Billionaire David Murdock announced today that he will pledge $35 million to Duke University to fund a biomedical research project. The new study, named M.U.R.D.O.C.K.—for the Measurement to Understand the Reclassification of Disease of Cabarrus and Kannapolis—will study how genes are linked to disease risks and health outcomes. Research by Duke scientists will be conducted at Murdock's newly constructed North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, N.C. Murdock, an outspoken proponent of disease prevention, is the owner of Dole Food Company Inc. and Castle and Cooke Inc.





McRoberts to return for sophomore season

After speculation that he might enter the NBA Draft, freshman Josh McRoberts announced Wednesday he will return to the Blue Devils for his sophomore season. "I am very excited about my decision to return to Duke to continue my academic and athletic career," McRoberts said. "I love the atmosphere at Duke and the support the University receives from the community. There is no place better to play college basketball."










Crime brief

An apartment on Central Campus was broken into by way of an unlocked door sometime Saturday morning after 2:30 a.m. Several personal belongings were taken from the Erwin Road residence, where one of the occupants was sleeping. No one was harmed in the break in.
