Students storm BC Plaza to protest noods

(04/20/18 4:44pm)

Amidst the excitement (and crowds) of alumni weekend and Blue Devil Days, approximately a third of the student body can be found on the BC Plaza at any given time between 11 and 1 on any weekday. Hoards of students groups are seen tabling on the plaza, yelling “DO YOU CARE ABOUT CHILDREN/AIDS/THE ENVIRONMENT?” to their peers who are looking at their phones and pretending that they don’t recognize the tabler from their freshman year seminar class. While crudely drawn signs and one table with a Beats Pill are usually attractive enough the draw a large crowd to the plaza, this past week, a different event created a frenzy on the plaza.

Amnesty day begs the question: What the fork?

(04/06/18 4:00am)

As a small, weakling freshman, I was giving hoards of advice during O-Week. But, to young Friday Friday, one piece of advice has stood out as both unexpected and lingering. As O-Week Friday Friday passed under the Perkins-Bostock bridge after wandering into the depths of E-Quad for the first and last time, I bumped into a scruffy senior, who was taking a mid-morning smoke break. As I started to profusely apologize, my overstuffed backpack hurting my spine, the senior raised his sunglasses, adjusted his t-shirt with a local brewery ad screen-printed on it, and said, “Kid, my best advice to you is this: steal as much as you can from Duke. Not big things, but small stuff. Pens, staplers, department shirts from religious studies, forks, whatever.”

March Madness: The Instagram edition

(03/23/18 4:44pm)

As students return to campus, West Union is flooded with conversation about students’ respective spring breaks. Indeed, recounting the infamous break is inescapable. Around every corner, students are talking about their “ahhmazing break vacays” and “restful ski trips.” Alas, although swapping stories of oceanside hookups may be tantalizing, nothing captures the Spring Break 2k18 experience quite like a picture does. Luckily, Duke students have ample photographs to show their classmates on their social media. Now, worked into every conversation about spring break, is the phrase, “And I loved your Instas!”—as if liking the photo and commenting “*fire emoji* AYY HOTTIE” wasn’t enough positive feedback.

Young Trustee: International protégé of mystery

(02/16/18 5:00am)

Monday and Tuesday of this week were exciting days on Duke’s campus due to the annual Young Trustee election. This election, in which students elect a fellow undergraduate to a three-year position on the Board of Trustees, is a staple of spring semester. While students are feeling overwhelmed with tenting, midterms, and internship applications, advocating for the Young Trustee candidate of their choice allows them to have sliver of control of their hectic Duke life.

Duke basketball commits reveal love of landscaping

(01/26/18 5:00am)

Over the weekend, high school basketball sensation and No.2 recruit in the country, Zion Williamson, committed to Duke. Williamson has gained notoriety in the basketball community for his outlandish dunking ability. Despite speculation that Williamson would commit to other programs such as The-School-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named-(Not-By-Us-But-)By-Corrupt-NCAA-Officials-For-Being-Equally-Corrupt, Kentucky, Kansas and Clemson, Williamson chose to become a Blue Devil on Saturday. Williamson joins an already-stacked class of incoming players, namely top recruits R.J Barrett and Cameron Reddish. Duke’s powerhouse recruiting begs the question: what makes these superstar players chose Duke over other competitive programs?
