For goalkeeper James Belshaw and head coach John Kerr, their first ACC tournament victory was no easy feat. Belshaw, the team co-captain, secured Duke’s place in the semifinals after making his first and only save in penalty kicks on Clemson’s sixth shot.
At any point during the season but especially towards the beginning, the opportunity to perform in the face of adversity can build or break a team. This weekend, the Blue Devils confronted a significant challenge, as they played three west coast squads in three days.
Despite being only three matches into the young season, today marks the beginning of Duke’s toughest road stretch of the year. Playing three games in three days, including a contest against perennial powerhouse Stanford, the No. 18 Blue Devils (3-0) will have their work cut out for them in their first trip to California since 2008.
The Blue Devils’ quest for an ACC tournament title begins tonight at 7:30 at Konskinen Stadium, as they will face Virginia for the second time in one week, after defeating the Cavaliers last Saturday, 13-11.
For the Blue Devils, this may be the most important game of the season.
It may have been the move that changed Duke’s entire season. With the team off to a slow start after two straight defeats, head coach John Danowski decided to switch freshman Jordan Wolf and Christian Walsh from midfielders to attackers.
There are many reasons why this weekend will be crucial for head coach Dan Brooks and his team. As they head to the University of Georgia for the Liz Murphey Collegiate Invitational, they’ll face some of the top teams in the country in their final competition before postseason play.
It’s a familiar spot for the Blue Devils. They open their season yet again as the No. 6 team in the country. They return their best player as well as a core of experienced starters. They’re even the preseason ACC favorites, again the team with the bull’s-eye on their backs.
Again, Ryan Finley saved the day.
Heading into this weekend, Duke prepared for its version of a Boston showdown. The Blue Devils faced not only Boston College Saturday, but Boston University Sunday. In the showdown’s first matchup, an incredibly hard-fought defensive struggle, No. 12 Boston College (7-4, 1-2 in the ACC) left Katz Stadium with the 1-0 win.
