Statement from Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead

(03/29/23 4:00am)

I have always advocated for responsible gun ownership throughout my law enforcement career. It is for that reason I support North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s quick veto of Senate Bill 41 which would remove a vital step in keeping guns out of the hands of people who would do harm to themselves or others. As I’ve stated before, Sheriffs know their local communities. Sheriffs are best positioned to keep ensuring that we have done everything humanly possible to prevent potential injury from gun violence. Keeping existing laws in place is another check and balance in the process of achieving responsible gun ownership.

Community message from Clarence Birkhead, Sheriff of Durham County

(02/18/23 5:00pm)

As gun violence continues to plague Durham, I am calling on the community to step in and help us prevent it. Now is the time to become change agents. As I travel across Durham County – be it speaking before a medical group treating victims for resulting physical and mental trauma, attending the riveting play at Hillside High School (“State of Urgency”), or being approached by a local citizen asking what we in law enforcement are doing – there are things we can all do.

Statement from Durham County Sheriff

(11/20/22 5:00am)

We remember the victims of the most recent mass shooting – this one occurring on a college campus, just one state away, and a short drive north from us. I send my condolences to the three (3) families of the young victims who lost their lives and prayers for those injured, and the entire university community in Charlottesville. As a former campus police chief and now Sheriff, I have always advocated for responsible gun ownership throughout my career as a law enforcement leader. Such senseless gun violence has to stop.

Enforcement of parking and traffic rules to increase

(01/26/01 5:00am)

In an attempt to ensure safe travel, accessibility by emergency vehicles and maximum parking availability on campus, Campus Police along with Parking Services, will begin more closely monitoring parking and traffic. This enforcement is necessary in part due to an increase in drivers who violate speed regulations on campus, individuals who park in unauthorized parking zones and the difficulty recently experienced by emergency vehicles-fire trucks and ambulances-attempting to maneuver around campus.
