It's three hours before the women's lacrosse team takes the field against rival North Carolina. Freshmen defensive stopper Meghan Walters can be found in the locker room watching game film.
Finally, the Grizz has a chance to write his senior column. Now, I am sure that there is quite a buzz surrounding my column.
In the early 1980s, the employees of the Pizza Hut located in Auburn, Ala. were given a few things to memorize. The correct temperature for the oven, the prices for each topping. But most importantly, they learned that if someone called and simply said, "This is Charles," three large supreme pizzas should be sent immediately to the dorm room of Auburn's star forward.
The women's tennis team held on tightly to its broom this weekend, sweeping two matches to extend its winning streak to eight.
Let's just say, you're sitting around at tournament time. What should you be aware of? Of all the things going on, what is the on thing to look out for?
So, how will the 2000 version of the ACC tournament unfold? Who knows.
The Maryland women's lacrosse team has won five consecutive national championships. And Friday night at Koskinen Stadium, the Terrapins reminded everyone of how that happened.
CLEMSON, S.C. - If the Duke basketball team were to enter the world of professional wrestling, it would likely bring back the memory of a certain face-painting, mohawk-wearing tag team of yesteryear: the Road Warriors.
Last season, the women's basketball team fell just once in conference play en route to a 15-1 record. That loss? An 80-75 decision at the hands of the Clemson Tigers in Littlejohn Coliseum.
It is unfortunate that the sports world is filled with idiots. Yes, it is one of the toughest things about modern sport, but it is true. And it is even more unfortunate that most of these small-brained individuals have found their way into the announcing booth.
Two years ago, the women's lacrosse team made the NCAA tournament for the first time in the program's short history. Last year, Duke reached the Final Four, before falling to Virginia by one goal.
There is a phenomenon that exists in sports called a letdown game, where a team coming off an emotional, hard-fought win enters its next game flat and loses to a team it would normally defeat.
WINSTON-SALEM - As the men's basketball team exited the Dean Smith Center Feb. 5, 1998, the Blue Devils' heads were down as they wondered how they'd just fallen victim to a 24-point thrashing at the hands of the Tar Heels.
WINSTON-SALEM - To say that the Blue Devil offense struggled throughout the first half vs. Wake Forest would be an understatement. Duke shot just 35 percent from the field and managed a meager two-point lead at the break, thanks mainly to solid shooting from the free-throw line.
WINSTON-SALEM - It has been said that defense wins championships. As the men's basketball team has shown over the last three years, defense can also win many ACC games-28 in a row, to be exact.
For the first 11:32 of the game against Virginia, Georgia Schweitzer was nowhere to be found. When Duke's leading scorer finally found the hoop, however, it was all downhill for the Cavaliers.
December is here and it is time for the annual slew of jokes at the expense of the BCS. Not a computer geek will be spared as sportswriters mock the scientists who devised the equation. But it won't just be the geeks. The witty scribe will be sure to take shots at meaningless bowl games with names like the Insight.com Bowl. But mock it all you like, the Poulan Weedeater Bowls of this world offer hope. I was once one of the cynics. I never understood why there is no college football playoff, and I'll admit, I still don't understand the BCS rankings. But I do understand that dozens of teams across the nation have no realistic shot of ever making a 16-team NCAA football playoff. And while the Florida States of the world freely mock the meeker postseason contests, what Duke fan or player wouldn't leap at the chance to star in the Mobile Alabama Bowl? The Blue Devils, and dozens of teams like them, have no realistic shot of making a 16-team playoff. To exclude them from postseason aspirations before the season begins is not the solution. A 16-team playoff would feature 15 games and would be so large it would squeeze out all the lesser bowls. Duke entered this season with realistic aspirations of getting to a bowl game, but would the Blue Devils bother dreaming of a top-16 finish? The BCS system certainly isn't perfect, and over the next several years I'm sure it will be tweaked plenty. But the bowl system as it stands now allows everyone to dream big. But this is not just about the Dukes and the Wake Forests. The elimination of the BCS also concerns the Florida States and the Floridas. One of the beauties of college football is that it truly is the only sport where every game matters: one loss and you're done. Some claim that it's unfair that a Week 1 loss ends national title hopes. But if you ask me, that's why it's fun to tune in during Week 1. NCAA football's regular season won't ever reach the meaninglessness of, say, the NBA regular season, but if you create a playoff in college football, it certainly takes away some of the game's edge. Florida-Florida State is a tremendous rivalry between two of the nation's best teams. I'm not going to suggest that a playoff would ruin the rivalry, but one of the series' best attributes is that every year, one of the two can ruin the title hopes of the other. The game means a lot less if both teams advance to the playoffs no matter what. Playoffs offer fans excitement and thrills, but in college football, the regular season already offers that. So keep football the way it is-exciting for everyone, not just the big boys.
Volleyball coach Jolene Nagel spent some time at Home Depot this season. After last year's 9-20 mark, Nagel had a lot of rebuilding to do with the Blue Devils, and she laid a pretty solid foundation this season.
The weekend didn't go the way it was supposed to for the volleyball team. The Blue Devils entered the ACC tournament with high hopes, but Virginia quickly put those hopes to rest on Friday.
