One of the sporting world’s greatest truths, as stated by American soccer star Alex Morgan is that “winning and losing isn’t everything; sometimes, the journey is just as important as the outcome.” The Blue Devils, who closed their historic season Friday night with a 15-5-3 record, experienced that truth.

Five years ago on a clement evening in Charleston, S.C., Duke and Virginia competed in a nail-biter decided just 1:27 into the second half. Duke forward Ella Stevens, served the ball, headed it past goalkeeper Laurel Ivory and into the net to start and end the night’s scoring. Due to an impenetrable Duke defense, the Blue Devils punched the ticket of their dreams to the ACC tournament finals.

(10/29/22 1:06am)

As the clock struck 8 p.m. Thursday, the storyline of two teams, each with their own strengths and reasons for wanting the win—most notably seeding for the ACC tournament—looked to end their contest with one victor emerging. But the two teams experienced a fork in the road—a tie. And though the regular season ended in a way that neither side was likely hoping for, the lack of a winner means that the story of the 2022 Notre Dame and Duke teams may be just beginning.

Before the Blue Devils opened their season Friday to a warm and sunny atmosphere and a crowd of more than 20,000 fans at Wallace Wade Stadium, there were no definitive expectations for what to look for in the team. Duke underwent considerable changes after a dry spell in its past few seasons. It won no conference games in 2021 and just one in 2020. Across the two seasons, the Blue Devils tallied just five wins. They were simply struggling to stay afloat as a challenger to any of the opponents they faced.
