Sportswrap: Men's basketball falls at home to North Carolina, baseball takes series to upset No. 1 Wake Forest

(03/11/24 2:49pm)

Sportswrap is your one-stop shop for everything Duke athletics, where we’ll recap how each of Duke’s sports currently in competition performed over the last week and give a brief look ahead. Here’s our recap for the week of March 4-10:

No. 15 Duke men's tennis crushes Virginia Tech, falls to No. 3 Virginia in split ACC weekend

(03/11/24 4:36am)

Last year, Duke had a magical run, one of the best seasons in recent history. But the team that prevented a fairytale ending was Virginia, defeating the Blue Devils in both the ACC Championship and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. The Cavaliers once again proved to be an Achilles’ heel, besting the home squad 6-1 in a hard-fought match Sunday afternoon.

Koenig finishes first, multiple Duke fencers position themselves for national qualifications at NCAA Regional

(03/11/24 9:32pm)

As the Duke fencing season nears its end, the stakes are higher than ever. This weekend, the Blue Devils competed for the chance to go against the best of the best at the NCAA Championship. This time last year, 11 Duke fencers placed within the top 10 of their respective disciplines at the 2023 NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. With eight of these Blue Devils still in the running, the pressure was on. To no surprise, the team delivered with freshman Charlotte Koenig championing women’s foil.

Duke track and field crowns two new All-Americans at NCAA Indoor Championships

(03/10/24 10:40pm)

This weekend, Duke sent three women up to The Track at New Balance in Boston to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships. Two brand-new All-Americans — senior Brianna Smith and graduate student MaKayla Mason — returned. The two days of intense competition saw 17 events contested, with Texas Tech and Arkansas claiming the men’s and women’s team titles, respectively.

And one: Ryan’s elite performance too much for No. 9 Duke men’s basketball in loss to North Carolina

(03/10/24 9:47pm)

After each Duke men's basketball game this season, check back here for the Player of the Game and more. The Blue Devils fell to North Carolina in the final ACC regular-season matchup, with the Tar Heels clinching the conference title in the process. The Blue Zone analyzes the 84-79 defeat:

Column: Roach took the blame for Duke's loss to North Carolina. But this was a team defeat — and one it needed

(03/10/24 4:03pm)

After losing to North Carolina 84-79 on his senior night, captain Jeremy Roach sat in front of his locker to talk to the media for presumably the last time at Cameron Indoor Stadium. His voice was low and his face stoic. He didn’t have much to say — he never has after a loss.

SENIORITIS: No. 9 Duke men's basketball trails wire-to-wire, gets swept by North Carolina to concede ACC crown

(03/10/24 1:50am)

Kyle Filipowski hit two quick jumpers out of the halftime break to bring Duke within five after nearly 20 minutes of deep deficit. Jared McCain edged backwards and applauded, eyed the jubilant Cameron Crazies and grinned. Elliot Cadeau missed a free throw, Filipowski backed down his man and hit a 3-point jumper as the crowd went wild. Head coach Jon Scheyer kept his cool, squatting by the bench stone-faced as Tyrese Proctor nailed a trey of his own.

5 observations from No. 9 Duke men's basketball's first half against No. 7 North Carolina

(03/10/24 12:26am)

Inside Cameron Indoor Stadium for the final game of their regular season, the ninth-ranked Blue Devils struggled to keep pace with the seventh-ranked Tar Heels for much of the first half before a late-period fightback closed the gap. Duke trails North Carolina 40-31 heading into the locker room:

Defensive solidity, shooting miscues characterize Duke women's basketball's chaotic ACC tournament loss to NC State

(03/09/24 5:23pm)

GREENSBORO, N.C.— A red sea flooded the stands Friday inside Greensboro Coliseum, with only small pockets of blue visible. This was nobody’s home court, but N.C. State fans showed up for their team in a way that was exponentially higher than Duke fans. And this no doubt had an effect on the Blue Devils’ performance in a game that was, by many measures, chaotic.

Beats' picks: Will No. 9 Duke men's basketball exact revenge on No. 9 North Carolina with ACC title at stake?

(03/09/24 3:40pm)

No. 9 Duke faces its last — and biggest — test of the regular season Saturday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium, welcoming historic rival and national No. 7 North Carolina. With an ACC regular-season title on the line, The Chronicle’s beat writers are here to offer their forecasts for what promises to be a chaotic evening:
