Associate Photography Editor Henry Haggart went out into downtown Durham on Saturday Nov. 7 to capture the scene as Durham residents celebrated the victory of Democratic President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris. With cars honking and people celebrating ecstatically, the city was more alive than it has been for quite a while.
On Election Day 2020, Nov. 3, associate photography editors Lydia Sellers and Henry Haggart went into Durham to capture the scene. The City of Durham urged its residents to mail in votes through signage posted throughout the city, and voting centers on Election Day had shorter lines than usual. But for those who did vote in-person, Durham aimed to make voting as accessible as possible, with both free Lyft and Spin scooter rides to the polling centers and handouts of snacks and masks at the centers. With the current pandemic, Duke students near and afar are spending their semester in creative ways. From new study stations to time in the sun, students have found new ways to keep themselves busy, all the way from the United States to São Paolo and Dubai. Two Durham teens put up 100 copies of Sunday's New York Times front page near the East Campus bridge, representing the lives lost in the United States to the coronavirus. "I’ve been finding the relationship to these numbers hard to grasp, but these are human lives,” Leo Egger, one of the creators of the display, told The News & Observer. “From far away it looks like an abstract painting but the closer you get the names come into focus.”
Commencement might be postponed, but some seniors got the chance to take graduation photos before saying goodbye to campus—and some who couldn't get to campus mocked something up anyway. The Chronicle asked for submissions and put this gallery together to help capture the spirit of graduation.
Students would usually crowd Abele Quad on the last day of classes, celebrating and preparing for the annual LDOC concert. This year, with classes moved online and few students still on campus, the quad was quiet.
Here are senior Bre Bradham's favorite photos from the last four years with the photography department. She's been an associate photography editor for three years, and was Editor-in-Chief as a junior. Whether it was flying to Detroit, driving to Massachusetts or getting a surprise call to cover a presidential candidate rally at the last minute, the stories behind each of these photos have been some of her favorite moments at Duke and have taken her from the steps of the Supreme Court to the front lines of protests. She would like to thank Ian Jaffe, Carolyn Chang, Sanjeev Dasgupta, Sujal Manohar, Juan Bermudez, Charles York, Mary Helen Wood and the Chronicle Photo department for all the advice and good memories.
After four years with the Chronicle's Photography department, here are senior Sujal Manohar's favorite shots. A Neuroscience and Visual Arts major from Dallas, Sujal served as Photography Editor as a junior after her previous roles as Recess Photography Editor and Associate Photography Editor. Her favorite ChronPhoto moments are photographing Obama at Duke-UNC 2019 and covering the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Next year, she will be working at an arts nonprofit which serves people with disabilities in Austin, Texas. She would like to thank Carolyn, Sanjeev, Ian, and Bre for all their support over the years!

Duke played its second game against NC State tonight. After a previous loss of 20 points to NC State, the Blue Devils were determined to win this game. The Blue Devils won the game, with a final score of 69-88.
